problem installing from usb hard disk

I tried to install opensuse 11.1 from a repository located on an external usb
So I booted with network installation cd, I choosed hard disk and I pointed to the directory containing the repo, i.e. /suse11.1/repo/oss, leaving empty the hard disk box
The installation succesfully starts, the 6 pieces of the installer are “downloaded” succesfully, but when yast starts the mounted usb hard disk disappears. The installation program says that /dev/sdc1 (the usb disk) is already mounted OR the directory /var/adm/mount/… is busy. If I abort the installation and go back to the textual installer, it sees again my device, showing it to me in the pulldown menu. Doing it all again brings to the same results (OK the download of the installer and again usb disappeared)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Please keep in mind that I am NOT trying to install from a bootable usb (that’s OK, no problem), but I am booting from the miniCD I am used to boot for network install.

I reproduced this behaviour on a DELL server with 2 SAS disks and on a “normal” sata pc, so I guess it must be an installer bug

Andrea

I have observed that in many linux forums, guys complain of this usb mounting issues.

Its a trajedy that in win2ksp4, this was never a fault, but in linux, till date its not settled. Why? out of my scope here.

Better do this, if u have any linux liveCD, boot and partition your pcs hard. Copy paste the repos u have on external to one of the partition.

Simply boot from the NetCd, and install from hard. Hopefully, Insha-Allah, it will install.

Good Luck.
