Problem Installing Driver

Hello everybody. I am new to opensuse. I have used fedora and ubuntu before but i liked opensuse more so i have decided not to switch to any new distro anymore. But i am facing some problems in installing one of my most needed softwares which used to run successfully on windows, fedora and ubuntu. The software i am talking about is smartcam which Turns a Symbian Series 60 phone with bluetooth and camera into a handy webcam ready to use with your PC i downloaded the file from this link Browse SmartCam Files on SourceForge.net since deb file cant be installed on opensuse i installed from the smartcam-1.4.0.tar.gz file. I followed all the instrutions written in it’s Readme file i have even done this before on fedora and i was successful then. but this time the first 3 parts go well, i.e., ./configure, make and make install then it says to go to the driver_src directory and run the following command make -C /lib/modules/uname -r/build M=pwd when i run this i get the following error

**
linux-2z4c:/home/shashank/Download/smartcam-1.4.0/driver_src # make -C /lib/modules/uname -r/build M=pwd
make: Entering directory /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/build' make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. make: Leaving directory /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/build’
**

since the software was already installed only driver is not installing so whenever i open the software smartcam it displays an error :
could not find smartcam device file. Please load (insmod) the driver and chmod 666 /dev/videoX

please help me what do i do now?? i have tried every search engine there is lot of help for ubuntu but none works in suse…

this is a very essential software for me plz help me to make it work. thankyou

43 views and no replies yet?? why so?? is there no body to help me installing a piece of software?? if you have not tried this software before then plz try to install this and if you encounter the same problem then you experts can find out its solution and then can tell me… plz i need to solve this problem very urgently my parents talks to my relatives at the US via skype. please do something else i’ll have to switch back to windows or any other distro… please just try to install this and sort out the problem. thanks

Why so ? Because your topic is HORRIBLE.

“Problem Installing Driver” could be many different drivers. It could be sound. It could be graphics. It could be wireless. It could be printer.

People tend to specialize. You are forcing people who know nothing about that hardware to read your thread. Many users simply will NOT bother to read it. And the chances are those who do read it, did so in the chance it might be to do with something else.

By such a bad title you have significantly reduced the chance that you will get the help that you want (and deserve) from the volunteers who frequent this forum.

Next time I recommend you use a better title in your posts.

Good luck, and I hope you have success, but that title will make it difficult for you.

use what works!

you can set your machine up to boot to windoz, ubuntu, fedora *and’
openSUSE…

or, maybe you can just use Skype without the video…that still beats
the phone, right?

or go out and buy a webcam known to work with linux…they don’t cost
much money…

have you asked in a ‘smartcam’ forum to see if anyone there with
smartcam experience has used it with openSUSE and Skype?

if you (as oldcpu said) had a thread named something like “Skype with
Smartcam & Symbian setup problems” then someone who has heard of, and
has some experience with those three Ss might pop in and help you…

try that in a Symbian and/or Smartcam and/or Skype forum…

> this is a very essential software for me plz help me to make it work.

if no one with answers stumbles into this thread, and if you get no
help from other forums then go back to my first point: if skype with
video is “very essential software” then, use what works!

Hi
@oldcpu <nods head in agreement>

@OP, I’ve had a quick look and will see about building up a rpm(s)
for you to install the application and kernel module. It may not be
until tomorrow though before I get some free time.

thankyou for your help everybody
@DenverD if i find any solution from those links i’ll post it here…
@malcolmlewis thanks a lot for trying to build rpms for me.
@oldcpu for the title i realize it is confusing but as i wrote in my first post that i had no problem with installing the software itself but the problem was only with the kernel module or driver. i just thought that this problem may occur with installing any kind of driver since it was not dependent on the software i installed nor it was dependent on skype… that was the only thing in my mind while starting the thread so i gave this title i did not want to confuse anybody but i realize now and will remember this thing for my future posts
thankyou all for reading and replying. i am sure my problem will be solved here

Hi
Ok, they are all built and on the openSUSE build service;
http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=smartcam&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.2

You need to download two files from the
“home:malcolmlewis:KMP/openSUSE_11.2_Update” repository, smartcam-1.4.0-4.1.{YOUR_ARCH}.rpm and
smartcam-kmp-desktop-1.4.0_2.6.31.12_0.2-4.1.{YOUR_ARCH}.rpm.

Where {YOUR_ARCH} is either i586 or x86_64 as you didn’t post the
version your running, if your not sure just use the command uname -a

Then manually install via using nautilus to browse to the download
location, then right click and open a terminal here, then in that
terminal;

sudo zypper in smartcam-*

The module had to be patched which I found on the ubuntu forums to get
it functional with the 2.6.31 kernel. I will push the patch upstream as
the Ub* folks don’t seem to do that.

Anyway, enjoy and next time ask nicely and be patient as we are all
volunteers here
