Problem after TW `dist-upgrade` to 20231023

Hello all :slightly_smiling_face:

I have a strange problem after the last dist-upgrade, so 80% of services do not work for me (network, audio, display problem…).

This is system data and hardware.

And these are the errors I get after dist-upgrade and trying to start snapper:

Failure (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound)

Welcome to the forum!

20231023 is not the latest upgrade
(10.28 is)

Upgrade to the latest and report back.

Unfortunately, the same thing happens with the latest upgrade.

The failure description is vague. What is the output on a terminal when you try to start a non working application?

That’s because I returned the last bkp with the snapper.

I start the upgrade again.

Which command do you want me to run after the upgrade?

This is just a small part, so you can see what doesn’t work, literally after the upgrade it kills 80% of the service, maybe even more.

Luckily there is snapper, so I can roll back to the previous version that works.

The last version that works for me is 20231011

Whatever I install from these remaining packages, my services break.

Can someone help me?

There’s some remote possibility that removing unneeded packages could be helpful in identifying trouble. You don’t need most of those kernel-firmware packages. Find out which few you do or might need, then remove all the rest. 8 or 10 should be the most any one computer needs. I typically have 4 or less.

I tried only with kernel-firmware and that “kills” most of the services

Tried what? Please describe how you determine “kills”, and list the “services” “killed”.

I understood that you said to remove unnecessary kernel-firmware and I did that.

When I install only this new kernel-firmware package, it also kills 80% of my services.

And you can see that in the picture above, where you can see that most of the services are not working.

Please show kernel-firmware packages currently installed. I have here only 4 installed:

i+ | kernel-firmware-i915 | package | 20231006-1.1 | noarch | OSS
i+ | kernel-firmware-intel | package | 20231006-1.1 | noarch | OSS
i+ | kernel-firmware-network | package | 20231006-1.1 | noarch | OSS
i+ | kernel-firmware-sound | package | 20231006-1.1 | noarch | OSS

You would likely need kernel-firmware-nvidia instead of or in addition to kernel-firmware-i915, and may or may not need kernel-firmware-network and/or kernel-firmware-sound. It is highly unlikely that you need kernel-firmware in your Haswell:

I would suggest another approach to narrow down the packages which cause the trouble. It will need some time (not that much) but it is way better than blindly removing packages which in 99,9% don’t cause any trouble on any machine. It is standard since ages that in Tumbleweed all firmware packages are modular and installed all by default.

The suggested approach depends on YaST software and installing the updates in small batches to find the real culprit. First roll back to a working snapshot and then:

  • open YaST software
  • search for the term “yast2”. Mark all packages with blue version numbers (upgrade available) for upgrade.
  • apply the upgrade only for the selected packages. check for malfunctions
  • if no malfunctions are found, procede to upgrade the next batch of packages
  • as example proced with the search term “mesa” and repeat the above steps…

In this way you can narrow down the culprit…
As only 133 packages are in question, you can split it down into few batches. The yast2 batch alone is already 44 packages…

When I install all the yast2 packages which are “blue” ie. they have an update, the same thing happens, 80% of my service breaks.

Your last terminal output is kind of interesting repository wise. Please show the output of

zypper lr -d

You seem to have factory repos enabled and also much strange home repos…

Then maybe start with another batch (other search term). Maybe the yast2 batch is already the culprit…
