probably udev problem (?)

Hello,

I have problem when inserting CD/DVD and USB sticks.
Except the root partition all remaining partition are not accessible anymore.
Few minutes after removing the CD/DVD or USB stick all is OK again.
I guess its something wrong in udev-rules, but I have too less experiences here.
How can i check what is going on during insert of removable devices ?

thx.wally

@Admin:
9 out of 10 trials to login here on the forum fails because I’m probably blacklisted.
How to fix this problem ?

That almost got unnoticed. While this might be frustrating to you, please next time take the trouble to post in the correct forum (in this case Forums Feedback) is much more effective that assuming that the staff reads every post from start to end.

People are looking into this.

@Henk

the “@admin” comment is added similar to Catos “Ceterum censeo …”

I sent several request directly to admin without any result
so now remains an expression resignation.

On the other hand i logged in today 3 times without problems.

Please post to the forums support forum with details about what happens
when it fails. The only reason you’d be ‘blacklisted’ in some way would
be either (a) if you were a spammer or had violated the rules (and since
you can login sometimes, that’s not the case), or (b) if you have an IP
address that has been used to spam the forums and the address was blocked
because of persistent spamming practices. (This is usually not a single
IP address, but if you get a dynamic address from some range that has
been blocked, that can be a problem).

But give us some details (in the proper forum) about the error message
you get when it fails, and we can probably diagnose it (or get it to a
technical admin who can diagnose it for us). As one of the admins, I’ve
not seen any message from you about this issue - direct or otherwise - so
I’m not sure how you’ve contacted us to be able to understand what the
issue is with that.

@Jim

thank you for explanation. I will send a detailed description next time i can not login again.
As for now, login was possible without problems yesterday and today. Probably something
changed in the meantime.

No ideas how to handle the udev(?) problem or how to figure out what’s the problems reason ?

For a start explain what “are not accessible” means. How you access them, what output or error you get.

Following scenario:
I want to copy files from a CD to my non root partition mounted at /home/user/WORK.
Before i insert the CD into the drive an can read /write to WORK folder.
After inserting the CD the context menu on right-mouse-click top position “Create New” is disabled.
Checking properties of WORK shows “Can View & Modify” and owner is still user/ users.
When I try to copy or move files from CD to WORK, nothing happens, no messages at all.
After ejecting CD, closing dolphin and open dolphin again, the “Create New” is enabled again
and I can use WORK as usual.

Sorry, the above is not correct:
After ejecting CD the WORK partition remains unaccessible, Yast Partitoner do not show
this partition anymore. This partition is part of a 2nd harddisk which is entirely not shown up in Partioner
anymore. The partion reappears after reboot and is mounted to WORK folder and usable now.

/etc/fstab:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD15EARX-00PASB0_WD-WCAZAE562024-part1 /home/op/WORK ext4 acl 1 2

Can you please use CODE tags around copied/pasted computer text in a post. It is the # button in the tool bar of the post editor. When applicable copy/paste complete, that is including the prompt, the command, the output and the next prompt.

And about your problem.
Please show the output of

mount

and of

ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/

in both situations. Then we can compaire what udev made of it and what is mounted where.

after inserting DVD , Yast partinoner does not show up

I have a screenshot from Yast Partioner but do not know how to paste here
Maybe no need for this screenshot.
Where to upload, so i can paste a link here.
In the FAQ is saif i should use “Mange attachments” can not find it.

after inserting DVD , Yast partinoner does not show up sdb partion anymore

Can you access (list content, copy files into) this directory on command line?

Yes I can list and copy from the DVD to the WORK partition in konsole with ls and cp commands.
After this Yast partinoner remains 'Initialization" state, waiting 5 minutes does not change the state.
Sometimes shutdown on my system takes nearly 2 minutes, maybe this is a hint.

What I see is that in the first case:

/dev/sdb1 on /home/op/WORK type ext4 (**rw**,relatime,data=ordered)

and in the second case:

/dev/sdb1 on /home/op/WORK type ext4 (**ro**,relatime,data=ordered)

In other words, the file system is remounted read-only??? Very strange.

This is normaly reported in dmesg. Please check that.

starting from normal state I inserted the DVD and did dmesg in konsole.
Then i tried to create a folder and copy files to the WORK folder( sdb1 is mounted to WORK ???)
I did several dmesg commans anbd below is the output. Not sure this is what you wanted to be checked.

I do not understand exactly what all the dmesg output means (and I hope others may help), but one thing is clear. As soon as you enter he CD/DVD in the device, a lot of problems show up. And most of them on sdb. While I can not realy see a message that /dev/sdb1 is (re)mounted read-only as a result, that apperently is the result of these (hardware?) problems.

And, of course, as long as /dev/sdb1 is mounted** ro** on /home/Work, you can not write to it.
You could try to unmount and mount it (after yyounsertd the CD/DVD and then again look at the end of dmesg again. As root:

umount /home/WORK
mount /home/WORK

Also you can check in every step if it is rw or ro

mount | grep WORK

Not sure anybody can use this, but I’m out of ideas.

it did mount unmount without and with CD inserted.

My guess is: hardware problem.

But you did not realy do what I asked. Maybe I wasn’t clear enough.

After the CD/DVD insertion:

mount | grep WORK
umount /home/op/WORK
mount | grep WORK
mount /home/op/WORK
mount | grep WORK

But if it is hardware, I doubt we can help you very much from where we are :frowning:

mount does not give any outputs , so nothing to grep

Anyway, problem will be solved by old microsoft method. Reformat etc. :frowning:

I forgot to remove cd on last restart, now all WORK seems to be gone:
fsck >>
Could this be a zero-length partition?

any emergency help highly welcome, just to see if there remains anything to get back

Can’t believe that. You should always show what you do and get. Only posting your assumptions will not help us to understand wghat is going on.

As you have read, I suspect hardware. Even a stupid Microsoft solution will not cure that.

Again, you should post what you do: prompt, command, output, next prompt. How can we draw conclusions from seeing nothing?
