Printing hell - OpenSuSE 11.2

Had no printing problems with 11.1 but upgraded to 11.2 and now have no printer. Have tried installing via usb and lpt. Keep getting “foomatic-rip failed” msg. Yast shows it as installed and waiting for jobs, but can’t even print a test page.

Hi
Just install the hplip drivers and as root user run hp-setup eg;

gnomesu hp-setup
or
kdesu hp-setup

Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Kernel 2.6.27.39-0.3-default
up 5:19, 2 users, load average: 0.11, 0.19, 0.29
GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - CUDA Driver Version: 190.18

Yep, tried that one too and hp-setup said it couldn’t find a printer…

I had some problems adding my hp all-in-one, similar to yours, when I updated to 11.2. I had forgotten 2 things for cups:

  1. add myself to the group “lp” and

  2. add a cups password for myself

lppasswd -a blinddog

and you will be prompted for a password. After that, you can add the printer normally through cups or possibly the hp printer utility.

Yep, tried that too… I’ve tried all of my old SystemV and Solaris CUPS knowlege to no avail. The only foolproof way I’ve ever found of adding a paralell printer in SuSE is to have it on during install. I made sure it was on when I did a clean 11.2 install, but hald zigged when it should have zagged.

It’s driving me nuts because 11.2 is an incredible release, and I’ve almost everything tuned in but the printing. I’d hate to waste time on another clean install as I SHOULD be able to figure this out.

Thanks for the tips.

The same problem with Konica Minolta PagePro 1400W:
/usr/lib64/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed
The printer worked since openSUSE 10.2 without a problem and in 11.2 finished to work. Before new install I connected it to my desktop and switched it on. Installation didn’t find it…

http://localhost:631/printers/

make susre the printer is published
set as default
set allowed users
oh! and start the printer
print test page

it was as always:
http://i1.fastpic.ru/big/2009/1226/f3/c1a5d6e6a8986bd4b7552cff0facd1f3.png

and even root cannot print.

Tried to use recommendations but everything failed. PagePro still doesn’t work with the same reason.

yeah Thanks
this helped me to solve this issue

if you are using the UNSUPPORTED OpenSUSE 11.2
you have MORE problems than the printer
ones that are basically not solvable

please use a SUPPORTED operating System like OpenSUSE 13.1 LTS or 13.2
