Printing from KDE apps causes freeze

OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bit) KDE 4.3.5

Printing from KDE no longer works. Opening a simple text file in Kwrite and attempting to print the document causes kwrite to hang. While Googling on this problem I came across this thread. The case is very similar.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57546

Running kwrite from the command line does not provide any information to diagnose this behavior. Printing works from Firefox and OpenOffice. Printers produce test pages ok.

This behavior came about after the HP C6380 stopped scanning. During my investigations I was forced to reinstalled hplip. This may have broken something.
Any ideas on how to diagnose this ?

hplip has a graphical interface (HP Printer Toolbox) with hardware information and a log. You might also check CUPS for clues.

If I reinstall cups do I keep my printers i.e. do I have to recreate the printers and drivers ?

I meant to suggest looking for information in the CUPS administration page. If you decide to remove and reinstall CUPS, I imagine everything would be detected as before.

This matter is now resolved. While struggling with the Strigi/Nepomuk system my Plasma Desktop Crashed. When logging in, I was confronted with a black screen. I was forced to recreate the Plasma Desktop following other posts on the forum. Printing now works ok, as does Strigi/Nepomuk. Yay !

I think they keep, so your problem might keep as well (I know that you solved it after a plasma
crash, I’m commenting for completeness).

There is a document in the wiki somewhere, cups in a nuthsell or something similar, where it
explains how to completely remove cups, in order to really reinstall it later.
