Printer won't power up

I was testing a used monitor yesterday. I unplugged my printer for a power source, and now after plugging it back in the printer won’t power up again. I also started getting a flickering horizontal line on my other monitor. The monitor is connected to a surge protector with six outlets, and the printer is connected to the wall. The used monitor is unplugged.

The printer is an HP Deskjet 3550, monitor an AOS 2436V. Any other info that might be useful just ask. Have any idea what’s going on? Are they both toasted?

Check the cable connection
Check the wall outlet
Check the panel board.
Check the surge protector

After swapping around power outlets and a device no longer works, do make sure the outlet in question still works. I use an outlet tester I got from Home Depot, but a simple small lamp will do. If the outlets good and the device does not turn on, then the device is defective. And, it is more likly to become defective when its powered down and back up, perhaps after its gained some age and has been running for a long time. Things work great till they stop working at a time and place of their own choosing. Since many devices use an external power brick, its useful to know if it is working or not. I use a small volt meter for that purpose as few devices around your house can share the same power supply. It is very discouraging to have such things occur when you are trying to fix something else. Just a few weeks ago, I had an external hard drive stop working. As is often the case, the hard drive inside of it is good while the interface board is likely bad. I removed the drive from the external USB case and installed it into my PC. The new hard drive worked fine, but another hard drive in the case failed and stopped working. I did nothing too it but turn off the computer and open up the case. It seems hard to win sometimes but it appears to be part of the game. So I have no miraculous fixes for you, but only sympathy and understanding about how such a thing might occur to you.

Thank You,

Just to add to what James has told you. Almost any small appliance can be used
to check that power is still available at an outlet. For example you could
use a desk lamp, hair dryer, vacuum cleaner or a corded drill.

If you have a “ground fault” outlet or circuit be sure to reset the ground
fault. If the circuit is controlled by a breaker (not a fuse), turn the
breaker all the way to off and then back on. Sometimes a tripped breaker
moves very little and is hard to detect.
