Printer/Scanner working in Linux

Ok,

As I type this I am still in a bit of shock… I had prepared myself a whole afternoon to try and set-up my printer/scanner/copier in openSUSE…

And all I did was plug in the USB cable, switch it on and the printer was detected automatically and it was done… rotfl! I mean, I didn’t do anything, ran XSane and it even scanned!? (Fair enough XSane is pretty weak but that isn’t the point, the fact is my hardware works… wow!)

I loath printers, have always and will most probably always, but this was too easy, thumbs up Linux, and two thumbs up openSUSE!

Just for reference I am using openSUSE 11.3 (Gnome) and the printer is a HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m… maybe later on I will delve deeper into some of the more advanced things I would like to do with the printer (printing photo’s etc.) but for now I will just savour the sweet taste of success.

Same here. It’s great isn’t it.

Thats the great thing of Linux. I just plugged in my old USB printer into one of my openSUSE computers and it just worked! rotfl!

That is good for Linux but it must all software & hardware companies to produce products which are compatible with our operating system. This windows monopoly must stop. However well done for this “usb” success.

I don’t think it was that easy for me with OpenSuse 11.1 but it was quicker than ever.
The real surprise for me was that HP Linux software perform better than the Windows HP software.
Sometimes I have to reboot Windows or the printer to get a print out, zero problems under OpenSuse.
Xsane works better than the HP and Windows 7 scanning programs.

Update… after rebooting the system with the printer attached I know have an HP icon in my “system tray” and all of the features I had in Windows… Wow… this is awesome!

I have an HP C309a network printer/scanner (all-in-one-premium) and I’m also very happy with it. We have it connected to our wireless LAN and under both WinXP and openSUSE Linux it works well for stand-alone-copying, network printing, network scanning, and also for printing covers right on a CD (where the later printing on to a CD was a big requirement of mine, as I burn lots of custom CDs).

While HP printers tend to be more expensive than printers from other suppliers, I do like the HP printer support for Linux.

…I have not tried using the wireless feature on the printer with openSUSE yet… and seeing as it is right next to my desktop I guess I don’t have too (don’t want to go jinxing my happy experience now :))

I hate printers, but I can tolerate most HP’s
