Printer Question from a newbie

Hello! I am incredibly new to OPenSUSE 11.0, and I am having one heckuva time getting my printer to load. I do have an older HP Officejet 5510 all-in-one, so I wonder if I need to get a new printer that will be compatible.

Does anyone have any help/suggestions?:’( :\ :stuck_out_tongue:

See here: OpenPrinting database - All HP Printers

Your exact model is not listed, but you can try model 5500. It usually works.

You may also want to take a look at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html if your printer supports ink level monitoring, etc.

Plug the printer into the parallel or USB connector on your box. Turn the printer power on. Start Yast from the System menu in Kmenu. Navigate to Hardware > Printer and if the printer is recognized it will suggest a setting. Otherwise set up a new printer and find the closest older model number. In the case of Suse10.3 it’s the Officejet 5500. It usually works for me. Some printer options may be missing.

Thank you, Brunomcl and ionmich. I truly appreciate the help. I’ll get to work on your suggestions right now!

Hi Carter

can we ask if you have the package hplip installed? It seems to be what drives the HP printers;

YaST will download and install it if you do not have it:

if you do not know where to look to see if it is already installed, ask back at the forum;

hopefully in following ionmich’s advice; YaST may just go and download hplip all by itself;
