Printer Problems

Hi, I am new to Linux.
I installed opensuse and am trying to install the drivers for my HP printer. I followed the instructions that where listed for the package and what showed on the screen in the terminal window.
The instructions in the terminal said i needed to disable the software repositories, so i did that. When the installation continues, it returns with an error 1. I did some research on the internet and it seems that the cause is that the repositories not disabled. So I closed the terminal window and attempted to enable the repositories, it errored and told me that something else had the repositories open… i dont know what it could be.
I didnt have time to restart and try again, but if anyone has some suggestions, i am open to them.

openSUSE comes with drivers for nearly all HP printers; there is rarely any need to install any.Just open YaST and find your printer in the list. If your exact model is not listed, select the driver for the next lower model.

I have never installed a driver for any of the HP printers I have used with my setup.

Just use the HP drivers included.

Uwe

I agree, I would use one of the default drivers that came with the cd, but one does not exist for my printer (HP4380C). I guess I will keep picking at it. Thanks for the responses.

Go into Yast and install the Hplip package.

HP printers are very well supported in Suse. I would be shocked if there was an HP model that could not be coaxed into working.

Ok did a search for Hplip and found an updated driver package. I installed it using Yast, then i found a new HP icon in Yast (after restarting the Yast Control panel). I clicked on it and chose to install a new printer. From there I got it installed and even got my scanner to function :).

I thank everyone for the time they gave me.

hi, i am also new to opensuse,
but i am having a problem with my lexmark x2550 all-in-one printer.
I have searched in lexmark, i have also search in suse forums and have found no specific driver for my printer.

i tried to connect it directy and opensuse recognizes that it is a lexmark printer and shows me several options of available drivers. nonetheless the printer wont accept these drivers cause they are not the specific ones that the printer needs.

Any suggestion?

i do have the windows/mac drivers cd that came with the printer, but it does not have any pdd files in it to use.

thanks for your time.

Hey, try here, maybe this might help

OpenPrinting database - Printer: Lexmark X2550

  • gchacon,

just a side note in addition to beardo’s reply: One problem per thread. You added your problem to an existing thread, which will hide it from many people. Opening a new thread with a good subject like “Opensuse 11: Problem installing lexmark x2550 all-in-one printer” will get you more attention and will give people a short description of your problem.
Next time
