Can somebody guide me into trying to get my Epson CX3600 to print out the same (or near as possible) to what it does in Windows?
Say I open a mail in Gmail and select to print it out; In XP/Vista this would use a single A4 sheet. Now if I print the same email to the same printer in openSuse 11.0 whilst in Gmail, it will print onto two pages.
I have had a quick ‘faff’ about with some of the settings (dpi/quality/page size) in Utilities/Printing but each time I get the exact same output from the printer. I did try to make adjustments in CUPS but get the message “Authentication Failed” when I input my username/root password.
If any of ye wonderful people out there have any suggestions, please bear in mind that I have had very little experience of using the Terminal Program/CLI.
oh, its big hasle printing in linux , sorry.Every program -Opera , firefox, Digikam, you name it, print it’s way. Keep looking for setings, once you choose “Print”.
In my worst case, when i can’t get it wright, I print to file.I get Post Script document and Kghostview just works fine for printing job.
And it’s even worse with photos >:)
good look
Are you using the same browser in xp/Vista.
If not this would explain the differences. I’m a web developer and it’s a pain trying to get pages to print with the same layout in different browsers IE is the worst as it doesn’t follow standards. Bit OT here nut might help explain the differences
Anyways, my father was having the same problem after I updated his laptop from WinXP to openSUSE 11.1 and what worked for him and probably you is by clicking the print allbutton at the topright when you’re reading an email. This will open a new window with a ‘stripped’ version of the email leaving the ‘gmail’ layout out.

Poor choice on gmails side, they could have simply used a seperate stylesheet with the media=“print” attribute and set everything but the mailbody / their logo to display: none;

wartyworm;
For CUPS the username should be: root; then enter root’s password. Unless you
have allowed remote administration of CUPS, this must be done at: http://localhost:631/

Thanks for your help. I always use Firefox (in Windows & Linux) for web browsing. I also did select print all in top right of Gmail on both ‘tests’.
Now I can log into CUPS okay I shall have a play with the settings a bit.
It looks as though when I print in Suse, the printout starts further down the page (top margin setting?) & also the line spacing is greater than in Windows. I’m not sure how to alter the line spacing though.
