How do I get the IP address of my wireless printer? I’m reading the documentation in CUPS but not finding it very useful.

Doesn’t your printer have a display with menu? What is the make and model?

If your printer doesn’t have a display or is not able to display it’s IP address as hui suggested, you can also find the IP address through the configuration interface of the router or access point it is connected to.

It’s a tiny display. Right now, I can’t seem to get past a QR code. It’s a Brother MFCJ1360DW.

Does your printer work with the brother iprint&scan app? If so, you can find the ip address under the settings tab.

You can try using Avahi to discover the printer and see its IP address.

Run

avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

If the printer advertises IPP, you’ll see output similar to

= enp1s0 IPv4 Brother HL-L2445DW Internet Printer local
   hostname = [Brother-XXXX.local]
   address = [192.168.1.123]
   port = [631]

The address = line is the printer’s IP address.

If nothing is returned, you can list all advertised services with:

avahi-browse -avrt

and report back here.

If you have an active firewall running on the openSUSE host, make sure mdns is allowed first.

Print a status report page / test page from the printer’s control panel.

Many printers today support WPS which can just mean telling the printer and the router to communicate using WPS. The instructions may be in the report page/test page. In this case you do not need to know the IP address. The devices will simply communicate to set a connection up.

For me - the most dependable way is to connect to the local network router (I simply use a browser) and check the list of devices. Yea, you can look at the printer’s little LED screen for it’s IP, but that doesn’t mean other devices on the network can see it’s IP.

Now easily connected to router - I only click “Status” or “Device List” to check for devices.
