Hello,
I use openSuse 11.1 64 bit.
My printer is OKI C9300dn on USB port. Yast found the printer, but can not recognize the printer driver, even I can see it in the folder /usr/share/cups/Oki/. Is there a possibility to install the printer manually?
Thanks for advices.

Info on this printer here.
Try configuring directly from CUPS interface on your system. Plug the printer in and turn on. Then open a browser and go here:
It should be as simple as clicking on ‘Find New Printers’. Adjust the preferred name if desired. Then click ‘Continue’. You should see the printer listed in device list. When selected click ‘Continue’. Now you should be able to select exact model. Click on ‘Add Printer’ and you should be all done. See how that goes.
Thank you deano_ferrari. It was really easy now and work fine.

Glad to be of help.
Interested what you did; as the site deano sent you mentioned an rpm file for Suse; but it is LSB 3.2 and I wondered if you manually downloaded that?
or did CUPS do everything for you?

The OKI C9300 is supported by installed CUPS drivers, so config only required.
what happens when someone wants to add a printer that is not in cups. What do they do?
It depends on the printer concerned, but in general if a PPD file exists, then it can be downloaded manually, and CUPS can be used to browse and install it. Where RPM packages exist, I download then install with rpm command from a terminal. That way I get to see if there are any problems.

sabbyman;
Go to:

You can search for your printer and with any luck find a correct driver.
Many, but not all, manufacturers do make Linux drivers. But if a driver is
known to work you should find it there. You can then install with CUPS.
