Installing printers seem to a problem with Linux. I have tried many attempts to install the above printer, even to downloading the driver from Canon for Linux, however to no avail. some months ago I was successful in loading the printer on Ubuntu 11.10, until Ubuntu crashed out on me and left my HDD blank, tried several times to reinstall but didn’t work.
I have now decided to use my Opensuse disk and would like to install my printer, but every effort fails. Any clues on a simple way to install please, I am not an expert, but if instructions are simple will have a go. I am in my 80th year and am keen to learn, I have no problems with Windows but have examined various issues of Linux and as they are free it makes my pension go further.

Welcome to the forums frederick121.
I’m not sure from your post where you are getting stuck, so I’ll start from the top, and you can ask more questions if something is not working, or clear to you
Checking the Canon-Europe site, I notice that there is a ‘MP270_rpm_driver_pack.tar’ tarball available. This needs to be unpacked first. If using KDE desktop (for example), you can right-click on the downloaded file ans select ‘Extract Archive Here, Autodetect Subfolder’. Ark is another good utility for unpacking these compressed archive files.
The RPMs contains another archive within: ‘cnijfilter-mp270series-3.20-1-i386-rpm.tar.gz’. This also needs to be unpacked to expose the two RPM packages contained within. Once that has been done, install them with your package manager. I hope this makes sense so far.
The next step is printer configuration, using the YaST >> Hardware >> Printer utility, or using the CUPS config tool with a browser (as i prefer)
http:localhost:631/admin
Select ‘Add Printer’ and follow the prompts given…
Typo: That should have been http://localhost:631/admin
After a while due to frustration, a spare moment, just thought I would connect my SUSE disk for inspiration, still canth get printer to work despite downloading driver. What is ‘package manager’ ? Have tried entering driver in terminal, but to no avail.
If you right-click on the downloaded package, you should get an option to ‘Open With’>>‘Install/Remove Software’. From there, the ‘YaST Software Manager’ should kick in.
