Print-able forum pages

Hi,

I just got a question answered, and thought I would like to have a hard copy. But when I look at the printpreview (both in Mozilla SeaMonkey and Internet Exploder) I see a payload squashed in the middle of the print, with large white areas to the two sides.

Is it possible to add a css for prints? The OpenSuse icon, the menu to the top left, and the big white space is not exactly information I want to see on a print.

until someone can wicker the forums code, try this (yes, it is a
multi-step process…sorry):

while looking at the page you wanna keep (in Firefox, and i guess many
others):

  • click ‘File’ > ‘Save page as’, and in the save dialog which opens:

  • select a place to save to (desktop would be handy) and in the lower
right corner spin the dial from “Web page [complete/html only]” to “Text
Files” and change the file name to end with .txt, then click ‘Save’

  • then, on your desktop, locate the file, right click on it, select
‘Open with’ and then select your favorite text editor…spend a few
moments deleting all that stuff you don’t need to print [you can delete
a LOT of ‘junk’ you won’t need, if you just want what was written by a
human]…then, click on the print icon at the top of most (all??) text
    editors…

  • when done with the file on your desktop, drop it in the trash…

i bet you would save enough ink in a year to buy a huge building!! and
your stack of paper notes would be a LOT smaller…

alternative 1: use nntp to visit the forum and all you get is the
WORDS…i use thunderbird (painlessly) and everything comes looking
like a plain old email…if i want to keep the words, i just click
print…simple.

Which forum skin is this happening on and have you tried others to see
if they have the same issue?

DenverD Your suggestion of using an nntp is great. I haven’t used a news server for years. Is Thunderbird the best shot? What address and server do you hit?

thanks,

> Is Thunderbird the best shot?

‘best’ i don’t know…
i just recommend that to the iGen who would puke/die if pushed to try
Mutt, Pine, slrn, tin, et alii

you can see a list of free/opensource clients at
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Usenet_newsreaders> i’ve used
Pan, Sylpheed and Thunderbird on other flavors…

i think my favorite of all time was named NeoLogic News (a shareware
for OS/2)…

but, here and now i find that thunderbird works, with quirks…
its all i’ve gone to the trouble to set up…no trouble
actually…GUI painless (which is why i recommend it to the iGens)

however, if you don’t already use thunderbird you can probably save
yourself a HUGE PILE of system resources (not to mention disk space)
by using what Loni uses (i think), which is either Knode or Claws
Mail (formerly known as Sylpheed-Claws), or both…

> What address and server do you hit?

  • support-forums.novell.com

  • port: 119 (default)

  • do NOT click to use SSL

  • it is a wide open server (no ID/Pass, which i do not quite
understand, since if you use the web side you must id yourself and
sign in every hour!!); so, do not check “Always request
authentication when connecting to this server”

  • i use iso-8859-15 Western as the default character encode…which
works ok, until someone imports UTF-8 and then it is UGLY…

give it a try, it is retro-fun! (and F A S T )

If you use Seamonkey it already has a news reader built-in & works quite well. Just go to Edit - Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings, when you have Seamonkey mail open & set it up from there

Hi all,

I just use copy and paste. I save everything that is of interest to me, and print out any of the saved documents that I want.

Best regards Keith

Thanks one and all. This is great news, for the printing, but also for a faster sans-graphics option.

thanks again

No knode ? Are you a Gnome guy ?

OMG! Another OS/2 survivor!
I used Ice/2, if I remember correctly.

when i first started on Linux i began on Gnome…
didn’t switch to KDE until Linus said “Just use KDE.”
and, my next install (SUSE 9.something) was to KDE, with Sylpheed i
think…

> OMG! Another OS/2 survivor!

yep, nothing else from early 1995 until (about '98/'99 when i started
experimenting with Linux…then switched completely pretty soon,
whenever RH 7.1 was new

only thing i miss from the Warp days is the object desktop model

I was on OS/2, from '95 on, then on to SuSE with 7.0. It is a small world sometimes. And I would also have to agree with your Object Desktop statement. I knew it was the end for Warp when OD started building as a windows app.

I just popped back on to say thanks again for your tips. I have knode up and running and love it. I am old enough in this game to both remember (though vaguely sometimes) and prefer some of the old ways. I guess that makes me retro? Nope, just old.

Have a great one!

very welcome.
