Primary monitor off after suspend2ram

Just updated to 42.2 and this is a new issue that’s been bugging me: When resuming from suspend (to ram) only my external monitor activates. I explicitly have to go into display settings every time and enable the laptop’s internal monitor (i.e. it is hard disabled, not just blank/backlight off - the mouse is bounded by the edges of the external monitor and all windows are relocated to it). This was not an issue with 42.1, on resume both would always come up in my extended desktop config as desired.

Possibly related: After the update I had to go into power management and tick “even if external display is connected” to get it to suspend on lid closure again.
I poked around for a setting related to turning off the internal display on lid close, but did not see anything relevant.

Second monitor is connected to HDMI. I have no idea where to start looking… any advice?

dmesg output from wakeup (includes tail end of suspend):

Derp. Forgot to say I’m running KDE/plasma.

The graphics card and driver details may be relevant here as well.

Can you show us what xrandr reports after resuming?

Thanks for the reply. It doesn’t do this if I suspend from the logout menu/button, it would appear.

Almost makes me wonder if power management is turning off the display when the lid is closed and then suspending, leaving it in that state.

So this is an Optimus system?

Correct, but internally it’s always muxed through the intel card (e.g. it cannot be changed to use only the 660M in the BIOS)

Just found another issue/symptom that may be related. When my display shuts off after 30 minutes (per PM)… it stays black and doesn’t resume. I still get a mouse pointer that moves, but just a blank screen.

This may need a bug report submitted to help resolve. However, you could try using a more recent kernel perhaps.

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ kernel
zypper ref
zypper dup -r kernel

then reboot and check behaviour again.

I don’t think it’s a kernel issue, but rather an X/KDE issue, if I CTRL+ALT+Bkspace I can kill the session and restart X; CTRL+ALT+F1 gets me to a console without issue.

  1. Does switching away to a VT and back again (without killing the session) do the trick?
  2. While logged in as user to VT (eg VT2) following a blank screen, run
xrandr -d :0

and note if HDMI output still present

I can only think that it is nvidia driver-related since I’m not seeing this commonly reported, and certainly not as a Plasma 5 issue. (I have intel graphics hardware and am not experiencing anything like this.)

No, terminal swap and back doesn’t work. I think I tried getting xrandr info (or rather, I planned to try a resize command from VT1 to see if it would bring back my desktop. As I recall, I got a display not found error, but I really should repeat that test, I think as I’m not entirely certain anymore).

Could indeed be a nvidia issue, worth scrubbing the driver (or even just unloading the kernel module?) and seeing if the issues persist?

Ok, good to know.

You’ll get that if you don’t specify ‘xrandr -d :0…’

I would expect other users with NVIDIA hardware and vendor driver to be experiencing/reporting the same issue. I’m still wondering if this is specific to the driver in use and the fact that you have Optimus hardware. I didn’t think the regular nvidia driver was appropriate for such hardware. I’ll leave others who are familiar with this hardware to comment further about this…

I’m not running the “regular” driver in that sense. There’s a script in a third party repo that downloads the drivers and installs them so that they don’t break Mesa for Optimus/bumblebee.

(nvidia-bumblebee-381.22-15.1.x86_64
nvidia-bumblebee-32bit-381.22-15.1.x86_64)

However, while doing an RPM -q for those package names, I see the following is also installed:
x11-video-nvidia-32bit-331.49-1.1.x86_64…

Smells like a conflict I should clear up?

Nearly all are 42.2. Pipelight is from 42.1, but that is a self-contained package, and the GTK 13.2 repo I have is necessary for old GTK-1 dependencies for my printer driver. I already bodged it up once by inadvertently having Factory in the list when running zypper dup, that was fun to debug/fix as it busted yast/zypper… but I got that sorted, removed the repo and re-ran zypper dup.

Repository priorities are without effect. All enabled repositories share the same priority.

Ok, well I guess this is all in order and the packages are compatible with your system. Next step is a bug report IMO.
