Is there any way to prevent Flash from capturing all keyboard input? I’m really sick of not being able to ctrl+l or ctrl+tab just because I’m watching a video, and today a video froze in fullscreen mode and I couldn’t even ctrl+f1 to any terminals or ctrl+backspace to kill KDE. It would be awesome to stop flash from grabbing certain key commands and pass them to the browser or OS instead.

same thing happened to me last night…
i did learn that with enough patience, eventually Flash will let go, and
i can use both keys and mouse again to drive a wooden stake into it
worthless heart!
tell me about your hardware/software…maybe it is a Flash<->intel
graphics problem, that not everyone is seeing…
mine is as in the sig, with Pineview Integrated Graphics Controller
using the open source “intel” driver for 2D and something sysinfo is
reporting at “Unknown classic (7.10.2)” for 3D

I do think it is a “feature” of flash. I use a flash application rather heavily, but it does not let me use the keycombinations for creating diacriticals in the way all other applications in KDE do (I have to cut/paste them from another window). IMHO Flash captures all key-strokes as long as you are in the browser window where it runs. Like the OP says. And when you then have this “full screen”, that is the only thing you have.
I never found a configuration for this inside flash, thus I see no solution.

Click somewhere else on the page the video is running in. I do this all
the time to get keyboard control back to my browser.

hard to do when in full screen…
and, i’ve had instances where it was impossible to mouse click/keyboard
input anywhere, including impossible to click to close the page, close
the browser or Ctrl+Alt+Fx…
it is nasty, but thankfully very occasionally…
well, for a while some years ago Flash would kill the desktop or the
browser…so, today’s Flash has made some progress…and, as said it
seems with enough patience (five or ten minutes) the machine is returned
to its owner, unharmed…

Usually if you’re in full screen you don’t need to give control to
another application. But in that circumstance, ALT-TAB always has worked
for me.

I see this very rarely, and when it does happen, I use a second machine
to ssh into the one that’s wedged up and kill the process that way. But
it’s been a long time since I had to do that.

Flash is more or less a ‘necessary’ evil these days. In some ways, I
fully understand Apple’s stance on not allowing it on certain of their
devices.

sometimes i might like to adjust the sound volume either by clicking the
on screen control, or with a keyboard combo…or just stop the video or
revert back from full screen…sometimes none or those things are
possible because Flash (plus something, i think) blocks all key and

i must admit after failing to regain control with Ctrl+Alt+Fx i didn’t
think about the old Windows switch application key combo…
i’ll try it next time it happens…
hmmmm, just remembered that i need to set up the ability to use REISUB
on this new machine/install…done!

yes, it is thankfully rare here also…
but, i can’t ssh in because i don’t have another machine and if i did i
still couldn’t get in as i routinely block the install of sshd…

yes, but i don’t like their reason for not allowing…and i’m not fond
of silverlight/starlight/moonlight/moonshine or whatever it is
called…happily looking forward to html5

I think there’s probably a combination of apps affecting it, or (more
likely) just that Flash in fullscreen is swamping the processor. Is your
system single core, or multi-core (or full MP for that matter)?
My system here is dual core, and that seems to help with loss of control,
since flash seems to only occupy a single core, there’s something left
for the OS to actually use for its work.

ISTR that being used on old *nix systems as well, probably something that
started at PARC.

Of course, that’s easy to remedy if you had a secondary system. Securing
sshd isn’t that difficult.

I agree, not really happy myself with Apple’s reasoning (something about
that old '80’s ad sticks in my mind). I’m OK with moonlight and Mono in
general, but like you, I think HTML5 is really going to resolve a lot of
the web multimedia issues.

Flash is of course not only capturing the keyboard, but the mouse also. I am not be able to copy/paste using the mouse in X fashion in a flash application (it wants me to use some odd keyboard combinations, which I allways forget about and are a pain to use anyhow).

oh, does it expect the EASY to remember windows ‘standards’:
ctrk+s (save)
ctrl+c (copy)
ctrl+v (vaste)
ctrl+x (xit) oh no, i forget also!
