First, openSuse 11.4 64bit fresh install, KDE 4.6.0. Now I am probably being obtuse, but If I click on the wonderfully named “My Computer” I get, among other things, a display of Disk Information; hard drive partitions and any DVDs or CDs. If I let my mouse cursor alight on any of these, I get a message “Press the right mouse button for more options (such as Mount or Eject)” But if I press the right mouse button, I don’t get those options; I get a message “Open in new window, Open in new tab, Open with …, Create file project with K3b, and Compress …”. Am I doing something wrong?

i doubt it…misunderstanding maybe…but, not a ‘wrong’ that can’t
be overcome with more knowledge…
if you select “Open in a new window” the device will be mounted and
you will be able to see its contents in the currently open Dolphin
window…
if you select “Open in a new tab” the device will be mounted and you
will be able to see its contents in a new tab (in Dolphin) and then
you can switch back and forth between the new and old tabs, each
showing a different view of devices
if you select “Open with [some application]” the device will be
mounted and the application you chose activated…this is like when
you right click on (say) a DVD drive with a (say) movie on it, you
will be offered to open with a movie player (or three)…or if it is
a disk of jpg images you will be offered to open in a image viewer, or
maybe an image manipulator like GIMP, or or or
or, if it is a CD or DVD maybe you want to use K3b to make a copy, or
rip music files to MP3 or or or

Yes, I understand all that. What I want to know is why pressing the right mouse button does NOT give me the options to Mount or Eject, when KDE explicity claims that it will. What, exactly, am I “misunderstanding”?

i’m not certain because i’m not running 11.4 and i don’t see a ‘tool
tip’ i hover over anything, so i can’t duplicate what you are seeing,
but i think maybe you misunderstand the meaning of the phrase “such
as” [which you quoted in “Press the right mouse button for more
options (such as Mount or Eject)”]
where that phrase used in “such as Mount or Eject” means that any of a
wide range of possible actions like mount, eject, open with, open in
new window, open in new tab, Create file project with K3b, Compress,
edit, move to trash, delete, hide, unmount, etc etc etc etc will be
made available in context…
that is, it would not be in context to offer the user the option to
‘mount’ the trash can, or ‘eject’ a USB hard drive, or . . .
make sense?

The OP is saying that when he hovers the mouse over an unmounted drive he gets the message
‘press the right mouse button for more options (such as mount or eject)’
However, ‘Mount’ or ‘eject’ are not amongst the options offered, only ‘open in new window’ or ‘open in new tab.’
Selecting either of these gives this result:

Make sense?? Errr NO it does not, really.
A restaurant has a sign outside saying “choose from French specialities like cassoulet and boeuf bourguignon” but when you go inside you find they do not have cassoulet or boeuf bourguignon, but only egg and chips or ham and eggs.
ps.
‘eject’ a USB hard drive, or . . .
Surely this would be a perfectly legitimate option?

sorry i tried to help you see it another way (wakou opened my
eyes!)…it seems you understand it just fine…
only the programmers can change it to read as it ‘should’…but, they
are not here (this is a forum of users trying to help other
users)…to let the programmers know it is broken you may ‘talk’
directly to them via mail list or IRC, begin here:
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Communication_channels
or, log a bug here: http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports
as usual, i ask when you log a bug return to here with a URL to the
bug so other who google in can find it, add to it, and track its path
to a ‘fix’…
