I have recetly acquired an Alienware 15 R2 laptop and I’m considering putting OpenSuse 15 on it. I have had issues in the past with my desktop which has Nvidia drivers (now I know which driver to use, that’s OK!) but I want to make sure that I can install everything I need from the get-go and hope it all runs OK.
I have checked and it has Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics card. Is it possible to add the Nvidia repo and the correct drivers from the installation (using USB stick) so I don’t run into issues after it’s installed? Last time I was met with a blank screen on my desktop and it was a bit of a nightmare! Does anyone know which driver from Nvidia I would need?
RE dual boot…is there anything else I need to do/be aware of? It’s currently running windows 10.

IMO, dangerous at the moment. Leap 15 has just been released and if you want to be sure of full proprietary driver
support, I’d wait to July in case there are issues.

Yes.
- Backup your data.
- Within Windows, create NTFS partitions solely for data that is completely separate from Windows/programs.
- Before you start, make sure have a Windows Recovery Media ready in case you need it.
- Disable fast boot in Windows.
- After installing openSUSE Leap, use YaST -> partition manager to auto-mount your data partitions.
Thanks for the response. I’m going to install 42.3 on my old laptop and see how that goes. It’s currently been stuck on “preparing disks…” for about 20 mins now :dont-know:

Yes, I’ve been stuck there for up to an hour…
I’ve empirically found 3 approaches to the problem:
a) Patience.
b) Disable floppy in UEFI/BIOS.
c) Load kernel with fail-safe settings.
If I go for 42.3 on the new machine, what Nvidia drivers would I need for this graphics card?
