Preloaded WIFI chip drivers

I know Opensuse Tumbleweed is not “especially advertised” as a newby linux distro but at the same time its installation process is probably one of the best for beginners with, for instance, the capacity to select a free partition to install it. Everything is smooth and easy except if your computer (spefifically laptops) has a non recognised wifi card/usb dongle.

Then, like for the rtl8812au chip based dongle I have, users have to start looking online for explanantions on how to install the drivers manually, meaning setting up an internet connection using their mobile phone, getting an open suse software package, usually available (normal repos or one click), or going on github.

I have some level of linux knowledge so not an issue for me but why not try ingto include more wifi drivers in the kernel like for instance Parrot OS does (I know it is a forensic penetretion distro so it makes sense)?

This is not possible for legal reasons. The following page explains in further detail with respect to proprietary software (including drivers)…

https://en.opensuse.org/Restricted_formats

True, I forgot that OpenSuse does not provide restricted software during installation. However, what about identifying the wifi chip and providing a link to an how to install it after the installation so beginners can just follow it. That would not infringe the proprietary software rule and point toward the right direction for users who need it?

Hello @leomedia2

However, please understand that openSUSE is a community effort, and to that end committed people with the right skills are needed to implement such a feature, so there is no guarantee that such a feature will be implemented.

I use the 8812au on tumbleweed and it works well. I use the driver from morrownr’s github. I find he keeps it up to date pretty well - he’s patched it for Kernel-6.3 recently.
I install with dkms and get an automatic installation on first reboot after kernel update. The only issue that you may have is that if the new kernel version has a code change dkms may not work without a patch for the driver file. But as i said nick morrow has already patched it for the next kernel release (currently rc)

Hi @Serial.com
I will look into it thx.

Hey @pete100
I have used the one from aircrack and no issues so far. My point was to make the information accessible from the welcome screen for beginners in the form of a link to some kind of tutorial
