Not working for me. Specifically, I am receiving the message “The Profile “” has been selected, but it does not exist. Please check your configuration.”
Everything appears to be correct in powerdevilprofilesrc and powerdevilrc. Deleted them and rebooted, etc. No dice.
A little googleage suggested that this is a known issue in some distros; it is related to the “Console Kit” for kde not starting. Could be the case in OpenSuse?
Anyone know a workaround for it? Is it possible to start this “console kit” separately?
My system is a Dell E6500 laptop, which doesn’t help. Empirical evidence would suggest Linux power management on a laptop is a finicky beast.

To check if it’s not a config issue. Create a new user account and see if the problem goes away. You can easily delete the account after testing.
If the new account is fine, then it’s almost certainly user settings.

Yeah, I tried a couple of other accounts as well - same deal. Don’t know what the issue is. Guess I may have to wait until 4.4 is stable.

Are you using openSUSE 11.2?
I’m not aware of any issues with powerdevil. And FYI kde4.4 is stable.

You have a borked system. A miracle things are running anyway. Take a close look at the URL’s: a mix of 11.1 and 11.2 repos. I do see some of them are not active, but they have been in the past, haven’t they. AFAICS, you’d be better off doing a 11.2 clean install, keeping /home untouched (and other partitions you have to store data).
Did you do an in place update with *zypper dup *from 11.1 to 11.2?
I did the live update from 11.1 to 11.2.
zypper dup may have been the command I used; I really don’t remember to be honest.
Personally I’d consider a fresh install of 11.2
Keep /home if you like
Before that you could try from a console login
mv .kde4 .kde4-bak
then do: startx
