Which client are you using? At least in Thunderbird and KNode one can choose to show either a threaded or unthreaded
view. Perhaps you are accidentally hitting some “shortcut” key that changes the view.

To me, it looks like you just have the Subject area too small so it
cannot display the tabs/spaces + the actual subject of the post. Try
making it larger.

It is a client issue.
I think that you are seeing a thread so large that the threaded part
goes out of the window. If you enlarge it enough you see again the “stairs”.
I see it too in thunderbird. There is no horizontal slider on that pane.

I am using SeaMonkey and both screenshots are from same thread and my
“post view” is set to threaded.

Both screenshots are from same thread . The first one is from top of the
thread. The next one is from further down in the thread.
Thread is from “opensuse.org.no-support.general-chit-chat” and subject
is “I don’t know why openSUSE, as much as I respect it, doesn’t stand
out more…”

Yes the upper pane should probably add a scroll/slider if thread has
many stairs
