Posts appear in a linear fashion instead of hierarchical in nntp client
after it crosses a certain threshold

Normally posts appear in a tree like manner
After crossing a certain threshold they appear in a linear manner

I don’t know whether this is

==>Forum software issue

Do move to appropriate forum if applicable

That’s probably a function of your NNTP reader (NNTP client).

I’m not reading via NNTP so I can’t check. If you can see full headers, then the threading is normally based on the “References:” header.

Which client are you using? At least in Thunderbird and KNode one can choose to show either a threaded or unthreaded
view. Perhaps you are accidentally hitting some “shortcut” key that changes the view.

To me, it looks like you just have the Subject area too small so it
cannot display the tabs/spaces + the actual subject of the post. Try
making it larger.

It is a client issue.

I think that you are seeing a thread so large that the threaded part
goes out of the window. If you enlarge it enough you see again the “stairs”.

I see it too in thunderbird. There is no horizontal slider on that pane.

I am using SeaMonkey and both screenshots are from same thread and my
“post view” is set to threaded.

Both screenshots are from same thread . The first one is from top of the
thread. The next one is from further down in the thread.

Thread is from “opensuse.org.no-support.general-chit-chat” and subject
is “I don’t know why openSUSE, as much as I respect it, doesn’t stand
out more…”

Yes the upper pane should probably add a scroll/slider if thread has
many stairs
