Post online update - Pre-Login error message

Following online update of the following:

bzip2|1.0.5-39.1.1|x86_64||update
libbz2-1|1.0.5-39.1.1|x86_64||update
xorg-x11-driver-input|7.5-9.1.1|x86_64||update

Just before the login I get a error box with

Cannot open ICEauthority file /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority

There is a OK button which then closes the box and proceeds to a normal login and working gnome desktop -openSUSE 11.3

Hi
Didn’t see anything here after the update…although I have rebooted.

Did you use zypper, online-update or software management?

very strange…that is, i’m not familiar with .ICEauthority outside
of /home/[whoever]/* or /root/

and, (generally speaking) the “can’t open .ICE*” most often follows
logging into Gnome/etc as root.

since i’m sure you didn’t log into Gnome as root, i mention now that
i’ve heard (but not witnessed) .ICE* can also be accidentally locked
by launching some (which?) “file managers” as root, even while logged
in as a simple user…

so i wonder: did you issue a “su -” then (say) “dolphin” and browse
through your /home or otherwise touch /home/[anyone]/.ICE* in the
process of the online update (or anytime during the session before
that boot)?

maybe you have witnessed what i’ve only heard rumored.

When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

Post the error I launched nautilus as su -
to navigate to the problem area

A bit of Google brought up some results mostly from Ub*

Sure. I never login as root.

I too was not aware of .ICEauthority outside of /home/…

Currently in kde, so issue not there. Will examine later.

I just checked on another Gnome installation and there is no .ICEauthority file in this location
I may try a mv on it
Reboot

But that will be later

yes, VERY strange…i wonder, if it is an accidental copy (maybe by
your root powered nautilus)…hmmm, but that doesn’t make sense!!

i wonder if any of the online update machinery needs and adds .ICE*
files around in places and then is supposed to delete them…that i
can’t answer, where is Malcolm ??

awaiting the mystery to be unraveled…
if you remove the file and all is well, i’d guess it might be good to
backlevel then do the update again and see if it is again
broken…then, log a bug!

Move the file out of the picture
Problem solved

No. DD I didn’t use Nautilus as su - until after the event

I can say though, I did something I just hardly ever do when I updated, I used YOU (Yast Online Update). I can’t see it being any different really, it shouldn’t be. But 99.9% of the time I do everything with zypper or Software Management.

Yes. But I don’t have time at the moment.

Hi
I always use zypper. Sounds like the markings of a bug, maybe it’s not
getting removed after the update by YOU (not you you … well
hmmmm maybe I just should be quiet now :wink: ).

Possibly. If so, it’s likely I’ll not be the only one.

Running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit with Gnome desktop. I had a similar issue where the error indicated that the ICEauthority file could not be updated. I tried changing the permissions and that did not work. Finally, booted to the installation DVD and chose the option to update my installation. I accepted all default changes. After the short process was complete, I rebooted and the error was gone. Was also having other issues and those were fixed as well. :wink:
