Post here your positive experience with 12.1

Hi All

After my hick-ups during installation and gotten kmail2 working, 12.1 ROCKS !!!

Everything else is working.

The system is noticeably faster. Opening of folders, start-up of applications…

Thanks to all the developers from Suse !

cheers

I agree…I notice a speed increase when opening up Nautilus, yast. My 11.4 → 12.1 upgrade went flawlessly other than gnome dock not updating to 3.2 and openmpi not updating/installing on upgrade. I fixed both, all is well on that end.

A+ to SuSE Devel!

3 Installs so far and it’s just great
So beautiful too

I’ve just done a clean install (but keeping my /home partition) on my Acer Revo R3610 (ION Chipset) media PC and it went well apart from hanging on the first reboot during installation. I haven’t really put it through it’s paces yet but so far everything seems to work.

I feel KDE is a little slower starting up and getting to the desktop than 11.4 was though. Otherwise I’m happy.

I’m now contemplating upgrading the two Thinkpad X60s laptops. These are our work horse PCs so cannot afford for them to be down for too long. I just hope the support for the Intel 945GM Express chipset is better than 11.4 which occasionally keeps freezing randomly and is a major regression from 11.2.

Hi!

Thanks to all Developers and supporters with OpenSuse lol! I have made a fresh install of 12.1 from DVD it works great. Yesterday I downloaded all multimedia codecs from here

Clean install. Black screen on restart during installation, fixed by reboot. Knetwork manager did not retain settings after initial set up, all OK since second attempt. Occasional error message from KDE4 relating to Package Kit and Knetwork Manager during configuration. Everything seems fine now, very slick. When I recall how impressed I was with 9.1 and KDE 3.0 it’s great to see openSUSE continuing to improve with each new release. Thanks to all the developers for a great distro’.

It looks pretty.

Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks.
openSUSE 11.4 (64-bit); KDE 4.7.3; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor;
Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (using nVidia driver);
Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA); Wireless: BCM4306

I notice that, too. But I think it is an illusion.

With 11.4, the desktop shows up very quickly. But I cannot do anything. I have to wait until whatever is going on behind the scenes is finished before anything works. Well, I do have an “xterm” start automatically, and I can do plain vanilla command line stuff with that. But that’s about it. Anything that opens a GUI window won’t show up until whatever is happening behind the scenes has finished.

12.1 looks slower, because there’s an animated graphic showing during much of that waiting time.

On my laptop, I have synaptiks set to disable the touchpad if another mouse is found. On that system, I go by “when the touchpad stops responding, KDE has completed its initialization”.

I’m generally pretty happy with 12.1. On my laptop, it solved some problems. With 11.4, the touchpad was only being recognized 40% of the boots into 11.4. It is fine with 12.1.

I still have to upgrade my desktop. I’ve decided to wait until firefox 8 is pushed out as an update, because otherwise the upgrade to 12.1 would be a firefox downgrade to 7.0.1.

I agree about the illusion and the initial long pause on 11.4. Generally KDE feels tighter and more snappy on my 12.1, and overall I am pleased with 12.1, but I haven’t experienced how it behaves if anything goes seriously wrong. :slight_smile:

What can I say? It’s just as solid as 11.4 so far for me. I had some trouble with the Nvidia driver when I first installed it, and it wouldn’t boot to a graphical environment. I dunno what I did, but re-installing today and everything is fantastic, no problems. Quick, sleek, solid. And I love Gnome 3. :slight_smile:
