Portable HDDs do not work, flash disks OK

Hi,
short time ago, I upgraded from Opensuse 12.1 to 12.2. Today I took a portable drive from my office and needed to work with some data on it. The HDD is older WD MyPassport with usb 2.0, formatted as FAT. I tried almost all usb ports on my desktop PC but always the same - this HDD light switches ON, the HDD inside starts moving, but no media is connected. Removed all other portable media from usb ports, but problem remains.

I also tried reboot - no difference - and brother borrowed me his Toshiba portable HDD - same problem.

Does anybody here have any idea, where could be problem?

Full bash output for both HDDs is here.

My brother tried that WD disk on his laptop (Opensuse 12.2 too) and had no problem (and also of course uses his Toshiba drive without any problems). Other portable media - flash disks etc. work OK on my machine.

Did you really do a regular upgrade? If this was me, and I did an upgrade, I would consider doing a full reinstall. However, DO NOT FORMAT your /home partition if you created one that was separate. All personnel data will be retained and you only need to reload your applications. It is more of a pain to do as you must manually create a custom partition setup that reuses all of your old partitions, creates no new ones but which only reformats the root / one. It is the way I always install the next openSUSE version myself. You can also upgrade your kernel version which could work, but it is very hard to say, but easy to do.

Latest Kernel 3.6.6: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.6.6.tar.bz2

Kernel Compile Script: S.A.K.C. - SUSE Automated Kernel Compiler - Version 2.78 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Its worth a try before you do anything else. After the new kernel compile and using openSUSE 12.2 and Grub 2, the most recent kernel, such as 3.6.6, would be the top entry just called openSUSE but you can find from the advanced menu by kernel version number if you like.

Thank You,

What method did you use? Did you complete the cleanup?

Online upgrade
method

Offline upgrade
method

Hi,
I used the Online upgrade method using Zypper. I only noticed one problem at the end of the process, when the system reinstalled the Wifi manager and I lost connection to the Internet. I had to reboot and then did package dependency check in Yast to be sure, but I did not find any way to check the upgrade. I did not want the full reinstall as I would have to download all the packages again and my connection is not much fast. :stuck_out_tongue:

However, unfortunately this seems to be hardware based problem as I tried to boot Windows XP (have dualboot) and I am unable to get those HDDs work there too. I will try to borrow an active usb hub and check it gain as I think I used portable HDD some longer time ago on this machine. :’(

Are those disks powered via the usb cable, or do they have independent
power?

Hi,
they are both powered via single usb cable and they are used with laptops without problems.

Then connect the external power and repeat tests. If it works, then it
is not a Linux problem, it is your hardware.
