I am having an issue with some programs and ports in OpenSuse. I was wondering if there was a specific method of forwarding ports or if I have to use the Yast Firewall. I have currently shut down the firewall (security was not an issue) because I thought it would allow me to use all ports, but it seems like some ports will not work.
Again, just wondering if there is a separate method to open ports or if I have to turn the firewall back on and allow TCP and UDP through ports that way.
If the firewall is off then all ports are unblocked, but that doesn’t
mean they are listening. If no service is listening on, for example,
port 1234/TCP, then nothing will answer when you try to hit port
1234/TCP no matter how many firewalls are disabled. So, which port? Is
it listening? Use netstat to show listening ports. Port forwarding is
another matter entirely, and is handled by the firewall service, so you
will want to have the firewall enabled if you are indeed forwarding
ports. If unsure about “forwarding ports” make sure that is the
terminology for the technology you are using. This would be forwarding,
for example, data received on port 1234 to port 12345.
Good luck.
