Popcorn Time 3.5 is available I got it here:

https://get.popcorntime.io/build/Popcorn-Time-0.3.5.3-Linux64.tar.xz

I then extracted the tarball into a folder called Popcorn Time my home folder.

I have had the same experience. You might want to try another fork of popcorn time http://popcorn-time.se/source.html or try other similar sites see if they are offering fork of pop corn time.
