I’ve a clean & updated install of 11.2 using gnome as the desktop. Power management (I believe) is causing system lockups.
If I leave the computer at the login screen, all is OK.
When I’m working, all is OK.
If the computer is idle, the screensaver kicks in, then about 30 mins later the computer locks up totally. Nothing suspicious in the log. Can’t switch to terminal, or get in using SSH. Only remedy is power switch + fsck on restart.
What do I need to turn off to stop this?
powerd is disabled in the system services. gnome power management has no actions set on timers.
I now have a corrupt root drive as a result so am now downloading liveCD so I can repair.
Thanks for that. I had trouble finding anywhere in either where I could disable power management, apart from the system services in YaST. It doesn’t seem to be an option!

is there in your “system tray” (or whatever you call that “task bar”
or “dock” with icons of running stuff in it) an icon which looks like
an electrical plug? if so, right click on it and click on configure,
or similar…
sorry, i don’t know what gnome calls theirs, in KDE it is Kpowersave…
Thanks. I think I’m going to give up on gnome. I have been trying it with the move to 11.2 (I had to reconfigure / resetup so much stuff in KDE I got bored) but now I’m having more trouble with gnome.
There is no icon on the panel. The power saver options don’t have a “don’t save power” option. I’ve set everything to “never” but this doesn’t say that power saver isn’t running. The gnome control lacks most of the features visible in the KDE power saver control.
GRRRRRR. Very annoyed. What a waste of time & effort.

if KDE is boring, and Gnome is a waste of time and effort then maybe
you should to explore one of the (several) other desktop environments
available for 11.2, like XFCE or LXDE…

yes, exactly like looking for things you don’t know you need…
as for liking KDE in 10.3: well, you could have done like i did…i’m
still running KDE3.5 in openSUSE 10.3…and, it remains stable, fast
and dependable…and, though it has not had any security patches since
1 November last year i’m confident it is more secure than a brand new
Win7 (or Vista, or XP etc) with an extra cost, $200 a year add on
“security suite”…
I’m also annoyed now that I didn’t grab a copy of the 10.3 updates repository before it was taken down … as it stands I can’t go back to 10.3, much as I would like.
Onwards & upwards towards better pastures. I’m sure my irritations will go away sometime.
In the meantime I’m going to try Xfce for a while.

Thanks for the advice - now it really is turned off!
I may have discovered the source of the failure. I was sitting in front of the screen when it did it most recently, and a screensaver was just starting up - then crash.
I’ve disabled that individual screensaver (it’s set to random) by removing the files and all seems OK so far.
The culprit screensaver seems to be photopile - I have a large collection of print quality (>3Mbyte) photos from various sources and I suspect one of them is causing it to choke.
Of course, all I have is cicrumstantial evidence, so the innocent may be being blamed!

let me add to your evidence: i’ve often posted in these fora to not
run the random…because, way back in SuSE 9.1 i found more than one
“screensaver” which would kill my system in one way, or another…
and, more than one person has stopped their strange hangs, lockup,
whatnots by picking a saver that works of my personal preference:
you know, i guess, that screensavers were a good thing back in the
'60s to '80s and some of the '90s…today they are pretty much a good
way to turn money into heat and unnecessary carbon in the atmosphere…
i’ve been using “Blank Screen” for years…and, recommend it (along
with turning it off when you are not gonna use it for some hours…so,
set the auto-power off thinkgy)…
Auto power off doesn’t work for some reason under 11.2. It worked under 10.3 (after a bit of config editing), but now no more. The same config copied over doesn’t work, and I haven’t the enthusiasm for going through the trial-and-error process again.
I do have auto screen blanking working. That saves a small fraction of a CO2 conscience.
