plug in ext usb hdd no auto mount

I am using OS 11.0

I have a external usb hdd. I formatted it ext3. I turn off my pc. I turn on pc after it is up on KDE3 I then plug in the ext usb hdd. It use to prompt me that I have connected a usb device. I would like on okay to open it. I could then view content.

Well it does NOT prompt me. I go to computer and I do not see it. I look at yast and see it in partition. It is sdb.

Note:
reason I unplug and plug back in to pc. I use it to copy files to it like a backup hdd. I copy my Mac file to it and my OpenSuse files. So I unplug and plug into both computers.

what was it formated as before that it recognized it?

im sorry its a new hdd. my other ext usb hdd is ext3 and it worked but now it does not. i have 2 ext usb hdd and both are not seen.

I know I am new but I had did a new install of 11.0 because I tried to upgrade to 11.2 and failed. That is the last thing I did.

I had 11.0 restarted 11.2 and did an upgrade. I got a blank screen. I reboot with 11.0 and did a new install and formatted hard drive like brand new install.

try formatting the external as ext 4 or try a clean install of 11.2

i do not see ext4. I only have in yast partition under format file system are ext2, ext3, jfs, reiser, fat, xfs, or swap.

i did use 11.2 clean install. That is a different problem. Had problem with 11.1 clean install too. I have delete with this is the past thought 11.2 would install. I am HAPPY wiht 11.0.

I just have this ext usb hdd problem.

ok, sorry, i didn’t see where it was a clean install. ext4 is with 11.1 and 11.2, i forgot that it started in 11.1. are you root?

sorry i never got 11.1 or 11.2 working. i am using 11.0. yes i am at the root desktop because my user can not login because of a kconfigure problem which i have to fix too.

ok, open a terminal window and post the resaults of this

fdisk -l

fdisk -l

device boot id system
/dev/sda1 82 linux swap solaris
/dev/sda2 * 83 linux
/dev/sda3 83 linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 1500.3 GB,
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 182401 cylinders
units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0X000000000

do you have two internal harddrives?

no just a 40g internal (laptop) and 1.5t external (USB)

ok, so it show that it is there that is sdb. You said that you cannot see it under the my computer or using dolphin?

correct the only way i can see the usb ext hdd is using yast partition but if i attach a usb key 1g it will prompt to open it but not the usb hdd

i think this is the code, open terminal and type

mnt sdb1

i think that is how you do it, i could be wrong though

i will try that

i just thought i would try a different usb ext hdd. i attached a 160g hdd and it prompt me and i open and saw content.

so i am thinking maybe there is something in the master boot that is keep me from accessing the hdd. i see in the yast partition there is a blue section in sdb that is 7.8g. I do not know what is in this partition since I can not open it but when i formatted the hdd i did the entire hdd.

hdd is a 1.5t seagate barracude LP st3150054148

did you try to reformat it or did you just do it once?

Do you have another suse machine in which you can see if it will recognize it there?

i have reformatted it 5 time sdb1 is 7.8g for some reason guess root needs it

i only have a mac and 1 linux. The Mac does not see it either. The Mac wants to format it

ok, i dont remember the mount command off the top of my head, it is either

mnt sdb1
mnt -sdb1

or

mnt/sdb1

but i think it is the first one.

I’m getting ready for bed now, so i’ll reply back tomorrow

Let see whats there. With the usb drive plugged in as root type fdisk -l (that’s a lower case L not a one) and post here.

Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7296 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x41ab2316

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 199 1598436 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 * 200 2810 20972857+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 2811 7296 36033795 83 Linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 1031 MB, 1031798784 bytes
16 heads, 32 sectors/track, 3936 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 512 * 512 = 262144 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdb doesn’t contain a valid partition table

Note: the last line…i formatted it 6 time ext3

my usb ext hdd 160g works it prompts me when plugged in
my usb key 1g works it prompts me when plugged in
my usb ext hdd 40g fat formatted prompts me

the 1.5t usb ext hdd does NOT prompt me when plugged in
