Please help; problem with Virtualbox.

I tried every resource i found through Google and these forums before posting but i had to give up; i desperately need help as i need to get some sort of VM running for school apps ASAP.

I know this has been posted here but i can’t seem to get it down. Problem: VirtualBox runs, lets me preconfigure an OS but when i press start i get two error windows.

The first:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine windows 7.
The virtual machine ‘windows 7’ has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Machine
Interface: IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858}

The second*:

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

‘/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup’

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

I proceed to run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup in terminal:

linux-47xl:/home/userx # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules failed
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

I tried the installation guides here, including the one installing the C/C++ and tools repos. I tied so many things i can’t honestly remember so i apologize. I did try to reinstall from the RPM from Oracle but same results.
I badley need to fix this because i need a VM for school stuff. This seemed to be a problem with Fedora too so it’'s kind of weird. If i can’t get it to work, being new to OpenSUSE, what other VM would you recommend that’s known to function properly on OpenSUSE??

Thanks.

Did you look at this log?

It is not a weird problem. You have not installed the kernel headers, which are
needed to build the kernel module needed to operate VB. There are lots of
resources that tell how to do that.

Why did you not report which version of openSUSE you are using and what kernel
you are using? I refuse to look at someone’s profile to get that info.

I’m sure i did that, followed this: https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/478769-virtualbox-wont-start.html#post2490185

Ran the terminal code and got:

Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules failed
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

Sorry forgot system info:

OS: Linux 3.4.6-2.10-desktop x86_64
Current user: ********@linux-47xl.site
System: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) “release 2”

Post:

zypper se -si kernel gcc make virtualbox

You should update your System.

Done. Didn’t do anything, still getting same results.

Here’s what the terminal popped up:

12.3 comes out in about 15 hours. Should i wait, upgrade OpenSUSE, reinstall Virtualbox?
I ask because i’d like to upgrade but if i can’t solve the problem here, i don’t want to recreate it somewhere else.

Anyone? :3

Can someone help me please? I switched to 12.3 and did everything all the guides say. I get the exact same result. This is kind of desperate but since i need for school i might have to switch to windows because i have hw due at the end of the week that requires a virtual machine. Is there any other good virtual machines for OpenSUSE?

Tell us the reasons we should help you when there is no indication in the thread
that you have looked at /var/log/vbox-install.log, which is the location where
the errors are logged.

QUOTE=JDarmody;2534720]Did you get it work? I followed your problem to try and fix mine but got nowhere :[/QUOTE]

67GTA’s problem seemed to come down to mixing 12.3 and factory repositories, and having non-matching versions of the running kernel and kernel-devel packages.

You should not be asking for help with the same problem in more than one forum section at a time. You just end up annoying people who might otherwise try to help you. Posting in pre-release tends to infer that you are fairly experienced/competent. It helps if you tell us about your system – e.g. how did you install 12.3, what repositories you have enabled, how you tried to install Vbox etc. There are other threads (that you have read) that advise posting the output of zypper lr -p, uname -a, etc in code tags. If you search the threads and How-Tos on this forum and try provide the what you have, what youwant, what you did, and what happened you can get problems resolved really quickly.

12.3 has now been released. You should only be using 12.3 repositories. If you performed a clean install, or upgraded from a DVD, or NET CD, or performed a zypper dup from only 12.3 repositories all should be well.

There are presently no usable VirtualBox kernel modules in the openSUSE repositories (including the 12.3 release DVDs and repo-oss). You should install the Linux Kernel Development pattern and its dependencies, then use the Oracle rpms which build the kernel modules to match the running kernel.

zypper install --type pattern patterns-openSUSE-devel_kernel
wget -Nc *http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.2.8/VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.8_83876_openSUSE114-1.x86_64.rpm*
rpm -Uvh *VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.8_83876_openSUSE114-1.x86_64.rpm*

System: Installed 12.3 from a LiveUSB, so wiped everything from 12.2 off my HD. linux-nt1e:/home/user # zypper repos # | Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh --±--------------------------±-----------------------------------±--------±------- 1 | repo-debug | openSUSE-12.3-Debug | No | Yes 2 | repo-debug-update | openSUSE-12.3-Update-Debug | No | Yes 3 | repo-debug-update-non-oss | openSUSE-12.3-Update-Debug-Non-Oss | No | Yes 4 | repo-non-oss | openSUSE-12.3-Non-Oss | Yes | Yes 5 | repo-oss | openSUSE-12.3-Oss | Yes | Yes 6 | repo-source | openSUSE-12.3-Source | No | Yes 7 | repo-update | openSUSE-12.3-Update | Yes | Yes 8 | repo-update-non-oss | openSUSE-12.3-Update-Non-Oss | Yes | Yes When i first ran 12.3 i installed, or tried i should say, VB through YaST2(Remove/Install sofware). Check below for what’s installed from there. Screen shot : http://s18.postimage.org/sbk1icftj/snapshot1.jpg Didn’t work, VB wouldn’t show up anywhere on PC or if i called it from terminal. From there i got the RPM straight from Oracle. Installed it. It ran but when i tried to open a virtual OS i got the same error messages i described in my first post. Run : /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup - linux-47xl:/home/userx # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules failed (Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong) So then i run virtualbox through terminal and it discribes that the kernel needs to be updating and it gives me the code to use(‘Cant remeber what exactly), does it’s job and seems to fix everything. Run : linux-nt1e:/home/userx # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done Removing old VirtualBox pci kernel module done Removing old VirtualBox netadp kernel module done Removing old VirtualBox netflt kernel module done Removing old VirtualBox kernel module done Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules done Starting VirtualBox kernel modules done So it fixes the first problem. Still VB doesn’t launch an OS. I’ve also installed the 3 repos as described in the other thread(C/C++, Linux Kernel etc). Didn’t make a difference. And here’s what i got with the coded you gave me: linux-nt1e:/home/userx # zypper install --type pattern patterns-openSUSE-devel_kernel Loading repository data… Reading installed packages… ‘patterns-openSUSE-devel_kernel’ not found in package names. Are you a fan of Ulysses (James Joyce,1922)? That was pretty unreadable.

Please use the “Code Tags” to preserve formatting. Also do not link to images on alien sites; use http://paste.opensuse.org/ .

We can forget everything from the attempted installation on 12.2 – it is now irrelevant, although if you had heeded the output messages and previous advice you could have fixed it.

You appear to have a stock 12.3 desktop installation with kernel-desktop-3.7.10. If this is not the case tell us.

Use YaST | Software Management to Search for “virtualbox” und uninstall anything it finds. Exit YaST, then restart YaST and repeat. Make sure that there is no package with “virtualbox” or VirtualBox" in its name installed. Especially there must be no remnants of the virtualbox-4.2.6 for *kernel-3.7.1 *that is part of the 12.3 release. Delete the old vbox-install.log so that the new one will only refer to the next attempt.

The instruction that I gave you for patterns-openSUSE-dwasevel_kernel WRONG. I apologise profoundly.
Either install this meta-package with YaST or use:

zypper install patterns-openSUSE-devel_kernel

then reinstall VBox you have already downloaded:

rpm -Uvh *VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.8_83876_openSUSE114-1.x86_64.rpm*

There should be no warnings or error messages except for the unrecognised Oracle signing key.

You might want to download all of these, although VBox can download and install the Guest Additions itself.

IT WORKED!!! Thanks you so much!! The first code just let me know the Kernel was up to date and the second one said: ‘Error, failed dependencies’. I still had the RPM on my PC so i just ran it like that, installed it and now i’m instralling Windows 7  I did delete everything like you said in the beginning too. So with that said, for future reference, is this the correct way to instal VB? 1. Don’t do it through YaST software manager. 2. Install the 3 patterns: C/C++, Base, and Linux Kernel development from YaST. 3.If necessary update kernel with the first code you provided above. 4.Intall the RPM via Oracles site. Once again thanks!!!

Had to reinstall OpenSUSE 12.3 to get a dual-boot going. Everythings good except after following my own steps VirtualBox won’t launch now.
It just shows the loading sign(VB logo jumping up and down.) but it doesn’t ever open.

I did all the steps i mentioned above.
ran:

linux-4e20:/home/userx # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done

I reinstalled VB a few times trhough YaST, got rid of everything that pops up with ‘VirtualBox’ and then use the RPM from Oracle. I’ve also added myself to the user group to give myself permission. Any thoughts?

Start it from a terminal and see what errors are output.

linux-4e20:/home/userx # virtualbox
VirtualBox: Error -610 in supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime!
VirtualBox: dlopen(“/usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxRT.so”,) failed: /lib/libz.so.1: file too short

VirtualBox: Tip! It may help to reinstall VirtualBox.

I’ve already reinstalled it a few times with the same error.

Did you reinstall the package for libzl? It is not part of VB. The 64-bit
version is 88304 bytes.
