Please help...I want to use suse in place of windows ...but

hi for every one,I’m a new Linux user and i’m not good in english but I will try to present the problem

I want to use suse 11.0 in place of windows, but I have one problem is that the Start button wifi does not work properly under SUSE, it is turned off and i can not turn it on … my wifi card is “Intel PRO / Wireless 3945ABG network connection”
the hardware is detected by the system but still not actif

so, please help me and thank you in advance

If you already have the driver correctly installed, then you must go to YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings and configure your wireless device, ESSID, password and so on. You may have to reboot to make it work.

I assume you mean the network manager is greyed out in your system tray?

This is for KDE, you didn’t say if you are using KDE or Gnome
If the network manager is seeing the networks but not connecting to your network you need to right-click the icon and select the option “Edit Connections” “New Connection” and fill in the information of your network.

or do what JosipBroz suggested and bypass the network manager.

josipBroz thank you and you too axiea …, I try all what you propose to me, I even installed ndiswrapper and then I installed the driver of windows … but always the same problem “indicator of the wireless card does not turn”

You mean the light doesn’t go on? That doesn’t mean much. Do you have a kill switch somewhere?

Uwe

exactly, the light doesn’t go on as i press the botton in my laptob…the wireless should be activated for this botton!!!
the operating system (openSuse 11.0) indicates “your hardware is not activated”
do you see?!

  • b ismail,

please open a console become root and
tail -f /var/log/messages

What do you see while pressing the kill switch?

Uwe

buckesfeld, this is the result of tail -f /var/log/messages

Ok, that looks like it worked until you pressed the button.

Uwe

I have the exact same problem here. I can swtich blue tooth on and off, but I can’t seem to swtich the wifi on no matter what I do. I also have the same network card as you.

It works fine when in Windows, but not when in Suse.

There is a bug in the version of the intel wifi driver shipped with openSuse 11.0. The light does not work. The wireless still works, just the indicator light does not. I believe this is fixed in 11.1.

You can switch the driver in Yast to use the ipw3945 driver instead of the iwl3945, this will fix the light, but the driver is unsupported and I had some problems with it staying connected.
