hello ,
please guide working and installation of External usb modem , dialp , DEll d400 ( in vostro 1510 )
many guys have problem by this modem , ( and I ) !!!
please guide !
First: welcome to the Forums.
People here will try to help you, but most of them have no crystal balls.
So please be more informative. Like
. which openSUSE level;
. what did you try, were there any error messages (and when yes, post the contents);
. anything else you think others need to be able to help you.
thanks, my friend, I have opensuse 11.2 (KDE 4.3.5 ), other my friends have this problem too, modem d400 on Vostro 1510 and suse 11.2 is installation properly , but applications for use it not work properly !
for example, my problem is this :
1.once my prolem is this message when Run KPPP form :
You do not have sufficient permission to run:
/usr/sbin/pppd
Please make sure that kppp is owned by root and has the SUID bit set.
I solve this problem by this command in superuser
chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd
2.after solve this problem , KPPP can not open modem ,
do you can solve this ?
Perhaps we must run KPPP by root user in command line , but this not public for dialup actions ,
oh find new Error , when I find modem port ( /ttyACM0) ! and in kppp new modem config on !!
I see this error :
Unable to create modem lock file…
please help
What is the output of
ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd
and do you know what it was before you changed it?
In my system it is:
henk@boven:~> ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root dialout 330764 okt 19 17:45 /usr/sbin/pppd
henk@boven:~>
so indeed the suid bit is not set. I am not sure it should be because why isn’t it then in the first place. (I must add I do not use pppd, so I am guessing here).
Did you read
man pppd
and specialy the paragraph about Security? It there states that some parameters/options may not be used by ordinary users. Please check with your parameters/options.
special thanks from hcw
Now after RUN chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd result of ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd is this :
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root dialout 362672 Oct 19 22:00 /usr/sbin/pppd
I today install my opensuse 11.2 , i have not change It,
Without an USB-ID (output of lsusb) I would not even try to give any advice about how to configure this thing.
Searching for the USB-ID (which will look something like this “1234:abcd”) via a search engine, will much more likely produce useful information if the device is supported at all and how to activate it (if it is supported, a lot of USB modems are NOT btw.).
thanks , I trust the modem supported in linux , because, I can use it… in other programs in linux , for example run properly in wmware , or can use it when in command line by root user kppp runnig !! ,
hello my friends , today , I unpluged my modem and After new plug to other usb connector of my laptop do not work properly , my kppp error have this error : unable to open modem, !!!
my modem plug in /dev/ttyACM0
please help
