Playing music on GNOME

I know KDE retains, as always, all or almost all its signature applications, such as Amarok for playing music and playlists. But what about GNOME? Why doesn’t it ship with a good “default” application for it? Rythmbox (or whatever it’s called) doesn’t seem to be the one since even after perfectly doing the 42.3 multimedia guide mp3 files cannot be linked to it.

Or is it that GNOME’s default for music is the Movies “application” as well, even when name itself implies it’s for movies?

The default Gnome music player is actually gnome-music, but much of the sound infrastructure is in common with the Movies (aka Totem) application, so audio files can be played with the latter as well.
Anyway, you need to install gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 to be able to play mp3 files and I think this applies to Rhythmbox as well.

  1. Does that mean gnome-music is actually inbuilt within Totem someway? So is Totem supposed to play mp3 files AND playlists as well? Because it’s able to, I have seen, but I’m never sure if it’s part of it’s “orthodox” functionality as well…

  2. Isn’t gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 package actually automatically pulled when correctly doing the Leap 42.3 multimedia guide?

No.
They are separate applications, but they both use the same underlying framework (gstreamer) for the actual playback, like many other applications too (also Amarok does by default).

So is Totem supposed to play mp3 files AND playlists as well?

Basically every video player can play music files (e.g. mp3) too.
It has to, as video files normally do have an audio track as well.

I’m not sure that it can handle playlists (I don’t use totem, as it’s name actually is), but I would think so.

No.
Actually it never was because it always was installed by default anyway.

That has changed in 42.3, it’s not needed any more as the standard gstreamer-plugins-ugly included in the distribution is built with mp3 support now and it should be installed by default.

I cannot tell you what “music” player is installed by default in GNOME (I think gnome-music should be there), totem (“Videos”) definitely is a general purpose media player though.

If you prefer something like WinAmp, have a look at audacious (that one does not use gstreamer, but comes with its own plugins).

No, I’d like to be able to use the DE’s default application, in this case GNOME. So I’d like to use gnome-music.

Problem is, even after correctly doing the multimedia guide, why isn’t a “gnome-music” association listed when right-clicking a mp3 file and selecting “open with”? At very must only Totem and VLC are listed. Not even Rythmbox is listed…

Why?

I’d say, use the one you prefer most, not the one somebody decided to be the default…

AFAIK, gnome-music only allows you to play music files that are indexed by tracker, i.e. it will find all files in your home directory “automatically”.

I think it you cannot open random music files in gnome-music. But then I never installed it at all here, so I may be wrong.

You should be able to change the default applications in GNOME’s settings though.
But if you do that, you won’t use the one that is set as default by default anyway…

Unlike other stuff, I’ve never preferred a specific music player, so I always was generally ok with whatever default one was included, as long as it was good/stable, etc. I think in old openSUSE versions Banshee was the default one for GNOME until gnome-music came to replace it. But I think mp3 files at least had Banshee as possible “associations” in the “open with” list back then.

And yes, I was trying to open a mp3 file in another home sub-folder, not directly in the home folder (and in this case shouldn’t gnome-music read from the home Music directory instead of home directly anyways?)

Instal Lollypop

Hi
Since it uses tracker to locate files, if these are in a different
location add this folder via System Settings -> Search and Indexing.

And with this will gnome-music application or program -whatever it is- appear in the “open with” list when right-clicking a mp3 file?

Hi
Not that I’m aware of, but as long as the music files are indexed it should be in gnome-music. Although if they are ‘all in a specific’ non standard directory you would need to update ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and point XDG_MUSIC_DIR to your location.

And is Leap’s functionality really supposed to NOT list gnome-music in the “open with” menu list for mp3?
This is the question

Hi
Yes, it’s really the mime type, if you look at the file properties mp3
is audio/mpeg which is tied to videos… Gnome music is intended to be
opened and if your music is in the folder it will be indexed and ready
to go.
