I have no HDMI connection on my laptop but wish to show a DVD video from my laptop on my LG TV.
Using the LG “Smart TV” option on the TV I can see several media devices for selection on the TV screen which are connected to my network, for example Twonky server with video media available from a NAS so the “Smart TV” device seems to work but at the moment my laptop cannot be seen by the TV.
How do I make my laptop visible to the LG TV so I may select video from laptop?
Nice to see someone else using Twonky - but I assume it’s on your NAS? I got curious but couldn’t stream the local dvd from my server. You might rip the dvd and put it on your NAS to stream it with Twonky. It may not be so convenient.
Tried VLC? https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Streaming_HowTo/Stream_a_DVD/
You could install another dlna server on your laptop (dleyna-server, minidlna, rygel). Can’t tell if they can stream the local dvd.
Hi
So what video connectors do you have? if VGA, get a converter? I suspect it all depends on what you TV system expects in the way of a stream, I would just use VLC on the laptop to stream.
According to a family relation of mine, sadly already deceased, LG TVs require a Miracast server. He also told me that LG devices mostly would only communicate with other LG devices. I don’t know it this is entirely correct, probably not. I did try to cast from my android phone to a LG smart TV and couldn’t, ended up using a Chromecast.
The smart TV is connected to my home network via it’s Ethernet port, basically for firmware updates. I use a FireTV stick connected to the wireless network and KODI to play media from the server box. However I never checked out the TV apps, perhaps there is something usable.
I don’t use but seen people talking about gnome-network-displays (available in repos). You might need to disable/open ports in firewall, however you prefer.
Hi and thanks for the suggestion. VLC was my first thought but I didn’t have a clue where to start. Thanks for the link but I have fallen at first fence with the instruction to add myself to “disk_or_cdrom.” I wondered why not dvd but more importantly I am trying to use Yast to do this and couldn’t find how.
Seems like a good plan but not sure if LG will accept the unicast connection.
Will keep reading.
Of course I am ripping the DVD with Handbrake and will put them on the NAS in due course. Just thought I should know how to do it directly from laptop.
Thanks again,
Budge.
Many thanks Malcolm,
Another idea but my newly acquired HP Z640 has a card with two DPs. I have ordered an adaptor as I should have one anyhow but it will be in post.
Regarding VLC am still working on how!

Hi and thanks for the suggestions. I have Firestick, Kodi on Firestick and LG Smart TV options. All can see my existing media servers but not yet my laptop as I have not yet configured dlna server. Am now looking at minidlna but have not yet found a man page. Other options available so will keep trying.
AFAIR once I had to do this, so I mounted a nfs share on the server, pointing to the folder I wanted to access on the secondary box. There were some settings to change in the mount options to allow access to share files, with some security implications, but no big deal. I don’t remember all details, it was a one-off thing, so I may be wrong in some points.
I tried this in a samsung smart tv. It sometimes work but more on failure to connect.
Here is some clue with my connection that hopefully an expert on this might find a bit helpful if he wants to chime in.

The last 3 messages at the bottom of the debugging shows when the connection to the tv is drop.
When gnome-network-displays use NETWORK_DISPLAYS_DUMMY=1 and access thru
rtsp://localhost:7236/wfd1.0 is all fine and I can stream from vlc.
