how can i fix this?
I have actually seen this very same error using sox. I use the file to play a “kernel compile is finished” alert in my bash script called SAKC, which you can download here in the forum. The circumstance was on a PC that had been VERY busy just before playing the short tune and using basically the built-in Realtek sound chip. This was an Intel dual core E6600 CPU with 4 GB of memory running 64 bit openSUSE 11.3. My solution was to pop in a different sound card, one from Creative and the hard to generate problem, at least for me, went away. By that I mean, it would always occur in SAKC until I replaced the sound card, but with the original Realtek sound, the problem did not seem to exist if I just opened up a terminal session and played the same tune that did not work before.
So, I think that it is sound chipset related, possible made worse by other PC activity. But this is just a guess. The odd thing was I had no problem with this until I pulled the Creative card and switched to internal sound. At the time I thought that perhaps the procedure was what was wrong and that if it had started off using the Realtek sound, no problem would have existed, but I was never able to check out that theory. So, you are going to need to tell us more about your sound setup and just what you are doing while trying to get sox to play a tune for you.
Thank You,
i found a couple of things wrong with my setup. first, i had a 7 socket usb2 port connected to a usb1 port (my machine is 5 or so years old), once i took that out, things improved greatly. it took me quite a while to identify this as the culprit.
i also checked my sound setup. i m not sure how, but the on board sound card was active. i removed the on board soundcard, leaving just the soundblaster audigy.
now (and after going thru the 16 step mmcheck script) all audio/video apps work like a dream.

That is great news to hear honda185. As a relative new user, I normally add a few more details about the forum operation. Please forgive me if I have already posted this info for you before. My memory is not what it used to be.
