In rhythmbox, there’s the possibility to specify an smb:// url in the library location. Just moved over to openSUSE and it suggests Banshee as an audio player for Gnome. Is there a plugin for Banshee or something that allows one to play media files directly off a share?
I would like to avoid having to mount the smb share because the server isn’t available when I’m on the road with the laptop. Or do you know of another way to mount shares depending on the location or somehow synchronize data to the local disk automatically (like windows offline files)?

You could try “Media”, “Open location”.
Why don’t you use rythmbox on Opensuse?
Open Location also doesn’t seem to work with smb:// urls. You’re right, I can use rhythmbox on openSUSE – that’s what I’m doing right now. In the meanwhile, I just wondered if there was a solution for this in Banshee. This might be the kind of thing that’s easy to implement once you get a user that asks about it (like many features in an open-source project).
