Plasma Workspace Crash After Upgrade to KDE 4.5

Hi guys,

I have just upgraded KDE to 4.5 but after reboot and login i can’t see my desktop. Only cursor, blank screen, and a window says:

Plasma Workspaces - The KDE Crash Handler
We are sorry, Plasma Workspaces closed unexpectedly.
You can help us improve KDE software by reporting this error

Details:
Executable: KDEinit4 PID:3787 Signal: 8 (Floating Point Exception)

My PC:
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+
GeForce 6100 nForce 405
openSUSE 11.3 32-bit
Using nVidia driver.

Try this

Do a console login
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/Session%20Login/console.login.png

At the command line, login with your user name and password.

Now do this:

mv .kde4 .kde4-bak

Now type:

startx

If you get to the desktop, all your settings will have gone, but they are in the folder we just renamed

Still can’t go to desktop for the same error :frowning:

One thing to try is to try reverting the NVIDIA driver back to version 256.53 as there are problems with the latest NVIDIA driver at the moment.

I installed nvidia driver this way nVidia Driver via Repo in 11.3 - Guide

If I want to revert back to 256 version what i have to do?

What is the output of:

zypper lr -d

and

rpm -qa '*nvidia*'

zypper lr -d

Nevermind, i restored opensuse image that i made before upgrade to KDE 4.5 to current partition.

Thanks caf and ah7013 for your help.

Update:
I removed 260.19 driver then installed 256.53 version which I got from please_try_again post NVIDIA 260.19 Issues.

Upgrade to kde 4.5 and everything works fine

Great! Glad it worked

Thanks, Andrew!

Hi.
Just installed opensuse 11.4 and have the same issue.

I did the above, and that did me to get running again.

But what to do to get really rid of the issue ?.
/Erik

One of the differences in 11.4 from earlier releases is the session login.
In 11.4 kde you should be sure you have selected kde4-plasma-workspace option.

Other than that Erik, I’m not sure why you would have a problem (other than the fact that .kde4 does have it’s random moments)
