Plasma screen capture non functional.

It seems the update prior to yesterday’s removed the screen capture program for the Plasma desktop.
It’s replacement is not yet in Tumbleweed for some reason.
When it does become available how will I even know it’s available?
I do zypper dup to update Tumbleweed.
Since the program is removed there will be no update.
How do I resolve this issue?

I use the screen capture function a lot and it’s not nice to have it removed and not replaced when that was the packagers intention.

There has been a discussion about this on the factory mailing list; see http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-01/msg00152.html ff for details.
It seems that you have to wait a couple of days, until the second part of KDE Applications 15.12 gets pulished.

I’ve been following that thread. I even asked this question there. I got no answer really.
Those people can’t even decide where we users are to ask questions right now. Some say factory others say in the regular opensuse list.
From what I’ve seen in the past asking Tumbleweed questions in the regular opensuse list gets you run off.

From what I understand since the existing screenshot program was removed by a recent update and the replacement was not installed it won’t be pulled in by the update it will be available since it’s not installed.
That means manually installing it which is easy but (a) what else is missing in those Plasma applications? (b) how can I be sure not to miss it when it becomes available?

“Those people” can decide and have decided:
The correct list for user support questions is opensuse.
opensuse-factory is reserved for the development of the distribution.

Actually it always was like that and hasn’t changed.
The main problem is that Factory is a supported distribution now, called Tumbleweed.

Some say factory others say in the regular opensuse list.

The users on the opensuse list that tell you that are wrong.

Nothing is missing (except spectacle, the new screenshot application), the packages were just not updated.
But it should be fixed meanwhile.

Spectacle is installed in the latest Tumbleweed snapshot.

It can be configured in Desktop Settings> Shortcuts> Custom Shortcuts >Preset Actions.
You need to change the default application to spectacle and hit apply.

As far as the opensuse@opensuse.org list goes I am sure that those people will have be reminded that Tumbleweed is allowed several times.

Too many people misunderstand Tumbleweed.
It’s as stable as any previous desktop version of openSUSE if you stick to KDE and Gnome.
Its difference is it’s a rolling release.
No it’s not for corner cases or the sloppy. But it’s safe to use as a daily driver.

For those who want stability switch to Leap now.
It’s much better than 13.2 in my opinion.
I am running it on my Laptop. It’s rock solid on my T400.

I had the same thing and I resolved it by going to System Settings ->
Shortcuts -> Custom Shortcuts. Right click on configure input actions,
select new global shortcut, command. Then in the trigger dialog box I
made the shortcut “print” (I just hit the prtsc button for that), and in
the action dialog box I made the command “ksnapshot”. That has worked
for me since then.

Yeah, but please note that this thread is about Tumbleweed.
And in Tumbleweed ksnapshot has been replaced by spectacle recently.

So configuring a shortcut to run “ksnapshot” will not work, it should be “spectacle”.

I had ksnapshot working well and replaced by spectacle during an update.
I saw this changes and before hitting yes. I searched first about spectacle
and learned it as successor for ksnapshot, so I tried it. IMHO, still a work
in progress. Lots of additional feature like export, save save as. Save
work but you got to know where the folder it is saving, save as didn’t work,
export to gimp work but not as good as ksnaphot for now, so I reverted back to ksnapshot.

Hm, I just tried that, and it works fine here. What exactly “didn’t work”?

But then, I’m using openSUSE 13.2 and the latest versions from KDE:Applications and KDE:Frameworks5. In particulary spectacle 15.12.1 and Frameworks 5.18.0 which both are not in Tumbleweed yet.

Hi,

It is working now here on tumbleweed including the printscreen.
The only thing I don’t like is if you hit save, it automatically save
without prompting for a name, so I need to hit save as every time to
make a name for the image. The notification is cool after you hit shift-printscreen.

In Leap save as here doesn’t work. If I select “ave as” it doesn’t do anything,
no pop-up where to save the image or what kind of image to save. I reverted
to ksnapshot in leap.

Hm, I tried in a Leap VM meanwhile, and it works fine there as well (the version from the standard Leap updates, no additional repo).

Maybe the “Save As” dialog is hidden behind other windows?

Hi wolfi,

The “save as” in leap 42.1 in plasma5 is now working here, however
if I use spectacle in another DE like xfce or enlightenment
the save as pops-up a blank dialog box. It could be the dolphin that pops-up
but not working in other DE. Note, I tried running dolphin in enlightenment and xfce and I see it
is working. Any thoughts? I find spectacle is a nice piece of gem and I like to see it working in other DE.

Thanks.

No, that’s not dolphin that pops up.
It’s KDE’s standard file open/save dialog.

No idea why it wouldn’t work in XFCE or Enlightenment though.

Try running “spectacle” in a terminal window, do you get some interesting error messages?

Hi,
This is from the terminal in xfce.

spectacle

Either it was just removed, or the directory doesn't have executable permission.

The error was after I pressed save as.

Thanks.

That sure sounds like a problem, but I’m not sure it would cause what you describe.

No idea what to do to fix that at the moment or what might be the cause, but I’ll think about it.

Just for understanding: it does work fine now in Plasma5 in the same user account?
And do other KF5 applications (e.g. kwrite or kate) show the same problem?
What about a fresh user account?

Never tried it in xfce, but it does work in IceWM too here.

Hi,

It is working also in icewm here with the same terminal output in xfce that I posted in my previous post.

Thanks.

Then the output apparently is not relevant at all, and it seems to be something specific to XFCE in particular.

As I said, I have XFCE installed. I might try when I find time for it.
But as already asked, do you see the same problem with other KDE applications? (kate or kwrite e.g.)
I would suppose so.

It works fine here (using the latest tumbleweed download). That said I don’t think it has been fully mapped yet - as if I press the keyboard ‘PrtScn’ button I get an error message saying ksnapshot is missing.

That should not be the case in Tumbleweed.

But the problem might be that the user’s config is not updated.
You may have to change the shortcut manually in KDE’s settings.

That should not be the case in Tumbleweed.

Apologies I had tried ‘PrtScn’ using kde4 in plasma5 it works fine.
