I have a highly repeatable problem with plasma’s “Software updates” launched from the panel. It errors and quits, plasma freezes and a reboot is required. journalctl -f displays the errors at the time of the freeze, but it doesn’t seem to getting logged. I can’t supply the errors because plasma freezes and I can’t change displays or cut’n’paste . What is even odder, ‘software updates’ logs a successful completion to the journal.
This is 100% repeatable
I tried ‘pkcon update’ in a Konsole and got these error messages, which I believe are the same as the ones generated by ‘software update’
Fatal error: vlc-noX-3.0.8-lp150.322.3.x86_64 requires libvlc5 = 3.0.8-lp150.322.3, but this requirement cannot be provided vlc-3.0.8-lp150.322.3.x86_64 requires vlc-noX = 3.0.8-lp150.322.3, but this requirement cannot be provided
Since I was in a terminal, no freeze. Also 100% repeatable.
Try:
zypper update
in a root terminal. That might give you some choice on how to handle the problem.
It is a problem with a Leap 15.0 + VLC installed from a VLC-own repository.
You can solve it by checking ONLY ONE item to update. I check “vlc-noX…” and then updating of all VLC components runs smoothly.
Support for a Leap 15.0 is coming to an end, so make update to a Leap 15.1, which has no need for a VLC-own repository to update VLC player, but using openSUSE repository.
VLC-own repository exists for a Leap 15.0, but not for a Leap 15.1.
For me it was “denial of service”, not “freezes”.
This problem is ongoing. I’ve done the ‘zypper update’ as a workaround. Launch it once, and it crashes at the same pount, but a second launch to complete the update works.
Yeah, I’ve got the LEAP 15.1 ISO, just need to find time to do the update and the hundreds of updates to the update.
Problem with VLC repo for a Leap 15.0 was solved by updating repositories using theirs settings in YaST.
