plasma desktop misbehaving

openSUSE leap 15.3
xorg
ryzen 5 2400g

I updated the system just now using yast online update and rebooted. It was a couple of weeks since the last update (2021-08-25). After the update the plasma desktop don’t work correctly.

  • There is no frame around windows, impossible to see where one ends and another starts when there are overlapping windows.
  • Background and taskbar do not update when switching virtual desktop, leaving images of apps from the previous desktop visible.
  • When logging in, apps are not started in the virtual desktop they were in at logout, instead they are started in what seems like a random desktop.

I’m writing this on an old Intel laptop, equally updated, and it works as expected. So it seems this is somehow connected to the graphics driver in use. And I have no idea whether it is a driver problem or a plasma problem. But it renders the ryzen machine more or less useless. Intended to try an old Athlon64X2/rs600 machine, but after I updated it a month ago there is no graphical login… Running yast on it to update it now, it takes a while on that old machine, but my hope is to use that to work on instead.

I wonder if the fix for https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1190478 could have caused this for some people. Plasma in 15.3 seems fine here on host gx78b, which hadn’t been updated for 63 days.

Rolled back to pre-update. The window frames was still missing. The composition was turned off due to extensive crashes (don’t remember the exact wording). Turning it on again after the roll-back.
