Plasma crashes when the dims automatically

The OP is describing desktop crashing upon screen dimming. Is that what you’re observing?

I upgrade every day using sudo zypper refresh then sudo zypper dup
I’m running today’s upgrades as I write this message. Yes I am on KDE Plasma Version 6.4.0

…and does the problem remain? Did you clear the user ~/.cache directory yet?

@deano_ferrari
I haven’t cleared ~/.cache - there’s 10.5GiB of data in there - is there anything that might break if I clear it?

Yes, it is safe to remove the contents.

@deano_ferrari - thank you for the reference I have deleted the contents

well, cache cleared and I tried Wayland. Plasma still crashes but not always and Spectacle can crash too. Wayland seems to be a huge overhead on system performance and it was less stable than X11.

@ilikelinux Pascal is getting a bit long in the tooth since it’s considered a legacy device… Nvidia’s focus is on Turing and GSP these days.

Have you considered a GPU upgrade?

@malcolmlewis - Pascal? Excuse my ignorance, where does Pascal come into the equation?

@ilikelinux the Chipset Architecture of your GPU… :wink: Turing and up support the open driver along with GSP firmware…

ok, I understand, I like my GT1030 because it’s almost silent and it does the 5120 x 1440 resolution. I don’t do anything spectacular on my computer, just zillions of browser windows open. I certainly don’t play games. A more modern graphics card seems to cost a small fortune and it’s really just covering up for the inefficient fatware that’s running. I might upgrade the CPU one day - and try to get one with a built-in GPU.
That said, I still get the crashes, so nothing’s changed there.

I think I found a fix in the KDE bugs:
