HI,
I just installed openSUSE 42.2 and so far everything runs great. But I do have some problems with KDE/Plasma.
Whenever I dock my notebook into the docking station with an external monitor connected Plasma crashes. Sometime the screen is completely unusable, sometimes plasma recovers.
Also when I configure my Desktop (icon size, wallpaper, …) These settings are lost after a monitor change. It is always reset to the default values.
I am running a AMD Radeon HD 8690M graphics card, currently using the Intel card. Does anyone have an idea what I can do to get this to work?
Thank you very much!
Try to install the latest Plasma packages from the KDE:Frameworks5:LTS repo:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5:/LTS/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/
(add this as repo and do a full switch to it)
There has been a fix regarding docking stations in 5.8.5.
Or you could also try to uninstall the intel driver (package xf86-video-intel) and use “modesetting” instead.
Should not give you disadvantages (actually there are reports that it works better and faster than the intel driver on some systems at least), even hardware 3D will still work.
Thank you very much for the suggestions.
I removed the intel driver package, but this did not help. Currently I struggle to switch to the KDE repo as I wanted to keep my installation as close to the default as possible. I hope that the 5.8.5 update will be released officially true the normal update channel.
Well, KDE:Frameworks5:LTS is the devel project for 42.2, it will only get bugfix updates so should be safe.
I hope that the 5.8.5 update will be released officially true the normal update channel.
I’m sure that there will be an official Plasma update for 42.2 at some point (submitted from KDE:Frameworks5:LTS). But I cannot tell you when exactly (or whether it will be 5.8.5 or some later 5.8.x version).
OK, thank you very for the help and information. Perhaps I find some time and will try the repo.
