On the same h/w, under kde4 everything works using openGL 2 and egl or glx but under plasma 5, only xrender works. Some things work and others don’t (which used to work under kde4).
I had tried plasma 5 earlier in Jan and reverted back to kde4 for the same reason and it seems that is still not fixed. Besides, many apps still need kde4.
The only reason I updated to plasma 5 because I felt hustled into doing so by all the nonsense about dropping kde4 and switching to plasma 5.

Yes, I see the same here on my radeon system.
The problem seems to be that kwin requires full shader support for OpenGL, but radeon’s is incomplete.
Forcing kwin to use OpenGL breaks the display completely, so it actually makes sense that it switched back to XRender (IOW, this in itself is no bug).

You mean some desktop effects don’t work? Yes, some need OpenGL, in KDE4 already.
Other than that, XRender works fine, and even feels faster I have to say.

Well, have you reported the problem to KDE? If they don’t know about it, they cannot fix it.

This is no “nonsense”.
KDE4 is nearly at the end of it’s lifecycle (i.e. it’s basically unsupported upstream), also Plasma5 has a lot of nice improvements over KDE4 already and bugs fixed that never will be fixed in KDE4.
Unfortunately they cannot be co-installed.
KDE4 is still available in the repos, but it will be replaced automatically by updates because you can’t expect users to having to do that manually.
Can you please explain what you mean with that?
