Plasma 5 crashes at start up after update

Hi,

Yesterday I updated my system (to 4.4.0 among other things) and today I can’t log in. During start up Plasma5 crashes. The screen is black, but I can start applications with krunner.

I saw in another thread that it might be a problem with Intel/Nvidias hardware, but I have an Amd processor and graphics card.

When I choose the previous snapshot with 4.3.3, everything is ok.

What can I do?

You misunderstood.
Plasma requires decent (and most importantly working) OpenGL support, not necessarily by the hardware but rather by the driver (Mesa’s software renderer does work fine if your driver/hardware doesn’t support OpenGL at all). In the end it doesn’t matter much what hardware you have (although certain driver may work better than others), and there’s certainly no problem specific to intel/nvidia cards in this regard (except that there has been a bug in the intel driver that caused problems with certain cards, and nouveau does still have severe problems with certain cards anyway).

One common problem, especially with Tumbleweed: if you use a proprietary driver (nvidia, fglrx), you might have to reinstall it after certain updates, the kernel in particular.

When I choose the previous snapshot with 4.3.3, everything is ok.

What can I do?

Well, first of all you should tell what graphics driver you are using.

That it happens after a kernel update (and works fine with the previous kernel) can probably mean one of those two things:

  • You use fglrx, and its kernel module isn’t found/cannot be loaded. In this case try to reinstall the driver, although I have no idea if fglrx even supports/works with Kernel 4.4.0 already.
  • If you use radeon, it might be a regression in the kernel driver. In this case you probably should file a bug report.

Please post the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log (when using Kernel 4.4.0), that should at least answer some questions.

I’m using radeon.

Here’s my Xorg.0.log (I have to split it up in two or three posts, since there’s a 15 000 word limit per post - the log is 46 000 words):

Ok, then there’s no point in trying to reinstall anything.

Here’s my Xorg.0.log (I have to split it up in two or three posts, since there’s a 15 000 word limit per post - the log is 46 000 words):

Yes, it’s preferable to upload such long files to pasting/sharing sites like paste.opensuse.org and post a link.

Anyway, I don’t see anything particularly wrong in there.
The radeon driver is loaded and seems to work.

Can you please post the output of “glxinfo | grep render” (run as user) too? You have to install Mesa-demo-x for that if it’s not installed already (i.e. you get no output).

Also, try to create a fresh user account (YaST->Security and Users->User and Group Management) and login as that. Does Plasma crash as well?
Might be that the user settings cause problems with the new kernel somehow…

Also maybe try to disable Compositing/Desktop Effects in “Configure Desktop”->Display and Monitor->Compositor. Does that help?

The Xorg log doesn’t specifically mention a problem, but still: check that you have the latest kernel-firmware installed (version 20151207git). The new radeon kernel module might require a newer firmware version and refuse to work (or have problems) with the old one.

Another thing to try: when Plasma crashes on startup, does it run when you start it manually in KRunner or Konsole (“plasmashell”), or does it crash as well?
In the latter case, the output on Konsole might be interesting (the last lines in paricular).

Humour me by trying the following:

Rename ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and then reboot (plasma will regenerate a new file with default settings) to see if that stops the crashing and restores to a proper desktop.

Thanks for the tip!

This is the output from glxinfo | grep render:

direct rendering: Yes
    GLX_MESA_multithread_makecurrent, GLX_MESA_query_renderer,
    GLX_MESA_multithread_makecurrent, GLX_MESA_query_renderer,
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV370
    GL_MESA_ycbcr_texture, GL_NV_blend_square, GL_NV_conditional_render,
    GL_OES_fbo_render_mipmap, GL_OES_get_program_binary, GL_OES_mapbuffer,

I’ll try your first two tips a bit later. But I found out that I have kernel-firmware version 20151207git-1.1. And plasma crashes the same way when I try to start it with krunner.

The output from Konsole is:

Looks ok, everything seems to be working for the user too, including “direct rendering” (there might have been a permission problem or something like that, which the Xorg log wouldn’t have shown).

This more and more looks like a regression/bug in the radeon kernel module in 4.4.0 IMHO.

But I found out that I have kernel-firmware version 20151207git-1.1.

Good.

And plasma crashes the same way when I try to start it with krunner.

Ok. So it is no timing issue when started at login. There is a similar thread where starting it manually after login works, that’s why I asked.

A lame question: How do I rename the file, and to what should I rename it?

I’m a newbie when it comes to working with the console. When I copy paste your command, I get a description of usage syntax and possible options to use.

Do you know the command, which I could copy paste?

You can use any file manager, and it doesn’t matter to what you rename it.
The point is that it is not found by plasmashell, so it uses the default settings.
You could even just delete it, but then your current configuration would be lost obviously, hence the suggestion to rename it.

Creating a fresh user account has the same effect though.

Btw, not sure if that’s the problem (wouldn’t be related to the kernel version then though, and it should crash with both)

KActivities: Database can not be opened in WAL mode. Check the SQLite version (required >3.7.0). And whether your filesystem supports shared memory
Service started, version:
KActivities: FATAL ERROR: Failed to contact the activity manager daemon

Try to remove/delete ~/.local/share/kactivitymanagerd/, but again a fresh user account would have the same effect, so it’s probably not the problem anyway.

And check that your system is fully up-to-date, try running “sudo zypper up” and see whether there are updates, or maybe even “sudo zypper dup”.

According to the message your sqlite3 might be outdated.

The last message before the crash is this though:

kscreen: Primary output changed from KScreen::Output(Id: 82 , Name: "DVI-0" ) ( "DVI-0" ) to KScreen::Output(Id: 82 , Name: "DVI-0" ) ( "DVI-0" )

So its likely the reason for plasmashell crashing.

A change (or bug) in the radeon kernel module might actually trigger this then.

So try to disable the “KScreen 2” service in “Configure Desktop”->Startup and Shutdown->Background Services, and see whether plasmashell starts then.
This will disable automatic screen detection and configuring the screen resolution, but it’s worth a test.

mv ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc ~/.config/old_plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

You can restore it later on if there is no change brought about by a fresh/default plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc … your subsequently provided output leads me to believe that it will be ineffective, but its a quick and harmless shot.

Yay, I can log in again. I created a new user with which I can log in without plasmashell crashing.

How can I repair/heal my default user account?

Yay, problem solved. I did the above (removed kactivitymanagerd/ ) and can now log in as usual.

Thank you both for helping me out !!

Great!

So somehow the kactivities database got corrupted or something, causing the crash.
Strange that it still worked fine with the older kernel and only crashed with the newer one though.

But well, at least your problem is solved…
