Plasma 5.5 on Leap 42.1

Hey there,

I am new to opensuse and I am currently exploring and considering to install Leap 42.1 on my Laptop. I have read a couple of things on how to install newer Plasma versions on top of Leap 42.1 by adding:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/

My question is:
If I would follow these updates and regularly update Plasma version, would I face any difficulties upgrading when 42.2 comes out?

Thanks for any response.

There is always that possibility as it can be dependant on your experience and understanding and we can’t really know that.
But essentially it shouldn’t be a great problem. Assuming you leave some leeway between release and upgrade.

I’d tend to recommend sticking with stock updates on the OS over OBS updates.

You could consider Tumbleweed?

Thanks for your response.

I actually have considered Tumbleweed, but I heavily depend on running Windows in a virtualbox (ArcGIS and other simulation software) and I am not sure how easy it is to always build the kernel modules myself after each kernel update.

There should not be a problem.

But Plasma 5.5.4 (and KDE Frameworks 5.19.0) will be released as official update in the standard update repo for Leap 42.1 anyway (the Plasma update has been submitted on Monday), so there’s not really a need for adding that repo.

If you use the virtualbox packages included in the distribution there is no need to build the kernel module at all.

Thanks Wolfi, that’s great news.
I might consider using tumbleweed however I checked the software OBS and saga gis and Qgis are unresolvable for tumbleweed.
I guess in that case I better stick with Leap.
