This topic is created to store impressions about plasma 5.5 under control of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Also I ask developers/maintainers/packagers, when it comes to OpenSUSE tumbeweed.
I have installed Plasma 5.5 in container of OpenSuSE Tumbleweed under OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Impressions are good. Some bugs, like Plasma hangs after clicking on activity button, are gone. Plasma 5.5 are faster. There’s last documents and application related to current activity in menu, etc.
When It will arrive there depends on how long the review, staging and openQA process takes and whether there are problems.
Impossible to say a concrete date, but is should be in Tumbleweed at some point in the next few weeks I’d say.
Do you mean like a VM with that container?
While I wait for the process to get to the update I’m curious is one of the gone bugs the one where only the mouse cursor can move but everything else (like opening up dolphin or Fx) is frozen?
Container isn’t the same like VM. Container can share resources, like directories, files, shared memory, network, capabilities and IPC mechanism with host system. VM excepts guest system are running custom kernel and with container there’s no separate kernels. Containers could works 5-15x faster than VM.
You can also share process list between host system and guest system, so from container with special settings you can send signal to process from host operating system(if you want)
The current plasma 5.4, in combination with Qt5, compositor, desktop effects and other supplied software is a disaster. Haven’t seen so many crashes in SUSE Linux with KDE ever. The vncviewer still does not work, likely because of plasmashell.
