I’m running 11.3 KDE 64 bit and I can’t figure how to paste files on the desktop. I know there’s some setting in KDE to allow dragging files to the desktop. How is it done?
You need to Unlock the widgets (right click desktop…)
You then find in the menu what you want to add, right click add to desktop.

contents of your home dir. (~/) as icons on your desktop. you can choose a
different folder by right-clicking on the desktop now, “Folder View
Settings”. in there you can change the folder to display, icon size, etc.,
and apply a filter if you like.

if he’s using the default “Desktop View,” unlocking will allow him to add
widgets and copy & paste things into any open folder-views. i understood
he’s looking for something more similar to KDE 3, which would be to change
from the default “Desktop” to “Folder View.” using that, he can copy &
paste anything anywhere on the desktop.

Folder View will display any folder on the desktop. So, if you put files you want to appear on the desktop regularly in /home/user/Desktop, they will always appear. However, the great thing about Folder View is that you can change the folder. So, when I am giving a presentation or at a meeting, I can change Folder View to the folder relevant to the presentation or meeting and change back afterwards.
Folder View can be resized to fill part or the whole of the screen. I normally resize it to show the files in the folder I want displayed.
In other words Folder View greatly extends the facilities for placing files on the desktop from what was available in KDE3.

Just a short comment, the Folder View widget isn’t required although highly useful for organization.
It’s also possible to place files and shortcuts directly on the Desktop.
