"Place in System Tray" - Apps don't launch

Using 11.1 x86_64 with latest updates and KDE 4.1.3

In the properties of a desktop icon If I alter the Advanced option to
“Place in system tray” then use this to launch the application then the
applications don’t launch at all. I’ve tried this with Dolphin, Firefox
and Thunderbird so far and none of them launch

This used to work in 11.0 with KDE 3.5 but I realise that KDE 4.1 is a
long way from there.

Any suggestions welcome.
