I am new to Linux-Suse, been working with it for about two years. I have a laptop that is still runing on windows XP. I would like to convert it over to Suse. Is there an easy way to sync it with my desktop? I dont have a network going, maybe a usb cable? Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the reply- to give a better example, I have a Dell Axim pocket pc. I can stick it its cradle & it will sync or update files from my laptop. What I was hoping to accomplish with a desktop & laptop both running the same version of Suse, is to easily update files from one to the other. I have hi-speed wireless Internet, but no network linking these computers. How can I network these two together? Or should I just stick with using a memory stick and transferring the files that way?
If they’re modern computers they should network by connecting a cat5 ethernet cable from one to the other plugged into the ethernet sockets. To be on the safe side, buy a “crossover” ethernet cable, although now a days modern ethernet hardware auto-detects the type of cable you’re using and auto adapts to it, so “crossover” is usually not mandatory, i.e. both crossover and standard normally work.
For the synchronisation you described, have a look at rsync and its GUI variants. There are Gnome and KDE GUI front ends for rsync. [gadmin-sync, grsync, unison, setara, opensync – I don’t know which are good and which are not because I don’t use it].

No, why?
You can see shares offered by other computers. But rsync doens’t need a
share to copy files.
