Pidgin 2.5.1 in OpenSUSE 11.1 Will not connect to anything

Another GA issue with an application within 11.1 after upgrading.
Pidgin will not connect to Yahoo or MSN. It worked fine with 11.0.
This is the second application that worked in the previous version but
not in the latest version.

Quite disappointing.

However it seems as though some of the issues are DNS resoluion based
and I have verified on other non linux systems and even Virtual Machines
that everything connects. I can browse the internet no problem and all
firewalls are disabled on the openSUSE desktop.

I installed the version in the repo and it worked without any issue.
i am not sure if it was from packman repo or OS.

I have not changed anything from the default 11.1 GA DVD install. I am
also having connection issues with Evolution and IMAP.

I have a dual boot system and the Windows OS works just fine connecting
to everything as does some windows VMs running on openSUSE in VMware
workstation. So I am pretty convinced it’s not a router or DSL Internet
issue.

I would suggest that you looks at the networking side of things.

cheers

I have checked all the network settings outside of openSUSE.

All these things worked prior to installing 11.1, I also get KMail to
work but not Evolution, so it’s not a network issue.

I have your same problem. Evolution produces an error trying to get
e-mail:

Error while Fetching Mail.

Host lookup failed: pop3.attglobal.net: Name or service not known

Of course the pop server is correct and the setup is the same a
sopensuse 11. Like you kmail works OK.
I’m glad I’m not the only one.

I’m surious why this is not something I have seen yet in more places.
It’s obviously broken in 11.1’s distribution of these two applications.

Have you guys tried disabling the suse firewall to see if that makes a
difference?

I have had some issues setting up the firewall and often ended up
diabing it to test applications to see if the actually work. It’s worth
a try at the very least.

I solved the problem adding the my isp dns server the resolv.conf

‘ping works, but nothing else does - openSUSE Forums’
(http://tinyurl.com/8hogzd)

Hope yours is similar as the one I have.

Interesting. I will try that. I did try disabling the firewall and app
armor but neither did any good.

Why though should we need to update the DNS manually when that is done
via DHCP normally? Then this would indicate a poor implementation of
the DHCP client in 11.1

Also what happens when I am not at home and in a hotel? The DNS will
be broken again so I still submit this is a DNS/DHCP or something else
bug in 11.1

Yep that worked!!

My router actually had itself as DNS1 and the ISP DNS as DNS2. I set
both to the ISP restarted the network and now the router is DNS3 in
resolve.conf.

Still makes no sens why it works with non Suse systems. It fixed
evolution for sure.

Pidgn is still slow but working with MSN without HTTP method
